Ronal magnesium wheels? Info needed
« on: May 25, 2017, 12:00:16 PM »
Hey guys, just after a bit of advice, I'v got the opportunity to purchase some wheels close to me.
They are described as yamaha ronal magnesium wheels. They are 18x2.15 and 19x1.85. My plan is to graft them onto my cb550.
I wasn't aware ronal made wheels for yamaha? All the Rd/xs wheels I can find pictures of, none of them are marked ronal like these. I know rickman used ronal wheels for their kits but they all seem to be morris style rather than these which are more of a lester style wheel.
Are they magnesium? Hopefully someone can cast some light on this for me, they seem real nice.
Cheers
Phil

They look like standard rd400 wheels.  My rd400 wheels don't say Ronal.  They do have a similar Yamaha emblem.  Where the Ronal name is, just says "tubeless Japan"

How heavy are they?  My rd wheels are pretty heavy.  If they are lighter than expected they are probably mag.

If it works good, it looks good...

That was one of my thoughts, the Rd had an 18" front wheel though.
I'll ask how much they weigh.

Also, they are described as new and never having been fitted to a bike, which suggests they are aftermarket?

Rickman Ronal wheels were aluminum and 5 spoke, looking more like an PVM wheel than anything. They look like raw aluminum to me. Does anything on them indicate they are magnesium?

Cool wheels nonetheless.

Iv not seen them in person so I'm not sure. The seller is selling them on behalf of his dad so he doesn't know much about them

Start here, name brand alloy rims..around 200 or + each. Good SS spokes, around a 100 per set.
So you got to ask yourself, do you feel ike lacing, or do you want even truer wheels..

Highly doubt magnesium. True the RD wheels were portly.

If they were for the general after-market, they wouldn't have the Yamaha tuning fork logo.

ronal is a german company, so hard to believe that yamaha used them as oem, could be a dedicated kit...
in this month's motociclsimo d'epoca issue there's a good article on all the aftermarket cast wheel industry that started in italy in the 70's: campagnolo, EPM, OZ, etc.

they were making a point of how unregulated that whole industry was with little in tems off quality assurance and product testing.

if they are magnesium indeed, wouldnt even consider using them unless you put them through a professioanal x-ray check

he got back to me with a weight. 15kg for the pair without discs which seems okay, surely lighter than spoked cb550 wheels or lesters?

I think they must be aluminium, as the edges are polished bare metal. Magnesium wheels have to be coated as otherwise they corrode very very rapidly.
