Dual throttle cables replaced by one
« on: October 04, 2006, 01:52:18 PM »
I haven't got the 650 in front of me to help me out, so here's the question.

Is the return spring on the carbs strong enough to close the throttle if I were to convert from the dual throttle cables to a single cable set-up? I want to replace the oxidised, and generally manky looking switch gear on the bike with some nice old plain metal ones, which will polish up nicely. That means losing the 'return' cable.

I appreciate that the second (closing) cable is a kind of safety back-up and I would lose that.

Thanks in advance for input.

I think it would be plenty strong.

I agree. The early 750's only had one cable and I can tell you it is strong enough to give your wrist a workout after a couple of hours. Just my opinion, I think it (second cable) was added in case of a spring failure, or more likely folks not maintaining the the cables properly.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Thanks Fiend and Bob. I kinda figured that that is the case. eBay here I come.

I'm running a 750k0 with carbs off a 72 which feature push/pull double cable set up. The K0 however was only designed for one cable so thats how I've been running with it and haven't had a problem.

Thanks for the feedback, one and all. Just snagged me a pair of old CL175 switchgear which will polish up nicely and look good on Sophie.

I'm runnin one cable with no problems. That return spring seems to be stout enough to hold up to the job.

how do you reinstall the stout return cable ?? i had to unclip (un-tension) mine so i could get the slides to open and move freely while cleaning the carbs without disassembling the rack ... its a b**** to get back on unless i am trying to hook the ends to the wrong places  ???..where should the 2 ends hook on to ? any pics and tips would be appreciated .. thanks ..  ;D

Link to exploded diagrams, check out the "CarburetorAssyLink" diagram, but it doesn't really show where it connects up to...

thanks .. i already checked it out and it doesnt help .. i made a mental note when i unhooked the ends of the spring, but it looks like it has to be wound real hard to hook the ends back to where they are supposed to be ..

i know the right (outer spring hook end) goes onto the throttle rocker shaft (or what ever its called) but the left hook (towards carb # 3) was hooked on to the rear side of carb # 3 ..this didnt seem right as i expected it to hook to a metal loop or small metal post ...

Reason for the second cable is that shoould the spring break, which has happened, your engine just dont slow down.
Original reason given by honda for changing carbs was it was possible to get an airflow situation where, on the 4 into 1 cable set up, the slides didnt come down--not sure if thats the real reason or not, personaly i think they got fed up of dealers/customers #$%*in about time involved in carb setting with the 4 into 1
