1979 CB650. 2 1/2 year project that finally runs and drives. No build thread yet, but maybe soon. "Built, not bought"

Don't just tease us like that, dude. Build thread?

Hello friends - happy to share my recently completed 1973 CB350F Restomod affectionately known as Requin (French for Shark). This is my first build ever and first time wrenching.

While the original bike looked like it was in good condition I can promise you a lot went into this build. Will be posting a build summary in another page per the rules, but sharing the final here! Thanks!

Everything on this bike (other than the engine) was rebuilt including carbs, suspension, steering clamps and bearings, brakes, all LEDs conversion, headlight, gauges, switches, paint etc.. Biggest addition to the bike would be the custom upswept seat frame and upholstered seat.

Did this small rebuild last year in april, an original Dutch '74 k2.
Started out as a classic racer inspired bike, with some great potential underneath. The gas tank was a massive 40 liters, so when that was full it was quite a heavy bike.

Had to search a ton of original parts, as I am no fan of repainted but prefer the old patina look, so had to find a good looking but original gas tank and matching side covers.
At the end it was a nice gold original bike again.

The baby dream finished and ready to join its big brother. There was a considerable amount of rot in the frame so needed quite a lot of fabricating and welding. The bike was pretty complete but the rims were beyond salvation so new rims and spokes were fitted, all the rest of the metal is original including the silencers.

Sorry, I got carried away by them being SOHC and not actually four cylinder.
I did however bring this one back from the brink, in retrospect, if I’d known how bad this bike was I’d never had started it. Apart from the heavy corrosion a brief list of problems is:- cracked crank cases, head had many stripped threads, broken piston, burnt out valve, main bearings completely shot, primary chain and tensioner buggered, cam chain stretched, spacer missing from gearbox which I didn’t realise till I’d rebuilt the bike, carbs completely gummed and broken float post. Rear hub cracked, bent handle bars, butchered wiring loom, rusty forks and seals leaking and one of those god awful king and queen seats.

The nugget just needed a drink of gas to run, Cylinders #1 and 2 were dry. I hope to get some good pictures of it tomorrow.

It's fresh from the car wash, still dripping. I needed to wash out under the front sprocket area after I cleaned inside there, and the inside of the fenders were sporting some road dirt.
It's not a restoration, I didn't pull the motor, kept a lot of the original parts and swapped out what I thought I should. It's a gold wrinkle tank that would not have come on it new, I got the tins from Mark B. after he decided not to build a gold bike.
It ran well this morning. It has the stock jet sizes 40/120? in the carbs, they might be rich with the 341 exhaust. We shall see.  I'm glad to see the upside-down pic. made me think of Frank.

Finally finished my ‘78 CB550! Purchased this bike in 2014 when I was 16 y/o and it was a slow work in progress ever since. I learned a lot along the way. This forum and everyone on it has provided me with so much help over the years and I appreciate it!

I didn't really consider this one a project but it was in a build thread. I did return it's rolled rim and handlebars to it and got a Yamiya exhaust from DSS. The sidecovers are genuine but repainted and the airbox is a Yamiya replacement. I decided to ignore the original miles which is getting close to 10K and ride it more often. It has a new Yamiya red seat foam under the original cover.
The pic is after the first time I took it to a motorcycle show. I think it was 7,800 or so miles when I got it. now around 9,830.

K1 836 Hot Rod named "The Rat Race" after the rat that was shot at while sitting on the seat.  .22 cal through and through the other seat.
I'm calling this one a rider, It's ready for the third test ride, I honed the cylinder and re-ringed it, put on the PO's lengthened swingarm and ported rebuilt head, RC315 cam and packed the RC muffler, rebuilt the front brake again, changed to the 18 tooth front sprocket, notched the aftermarket chain guard and fixed the non-working charging system. It now has a stock rebuilt 78F clutch assembly instead of the 9 disc red clutches. It also got a set of F1 forks lowered with cb500 progressive springs with the original K1 gauges and triple trees. It had modified cb500 triple trees for the 45mm offset but both top triple clamps were broken.
I learned a little about the gerex ignition, if voltage is low, get it above 3K rpm so it's not multi sparking. 12.5 to 1 pistons just kick start hard, it's not seized. L0L!

A collection of parts sometimes goes past the point of what it was. It gains a heritage made by where it's been and who put their parts and heart and soul into it.
Steve Egli built it with RC engine parts, Gerex ignition, Lester mags, and Mikuni carbs. He built it, raced it, broke it and repaired it. I made it run again with parts Steve sold me, a couple of my parts and the seat and rear fender from Tom Campbells old drag bike. It could not have lived on without the teaching of my brother Bud, Tom, Charlies Cycle Supply, and the guys at sohc4 forum.

Completed build threads - The Mauler

This is a project we recently completed for a client in South Australia.  Originally found in Rochester NY, shipped down-under and after a lot of man hours transformed into the Mauler.
There's no such thing as dumb questions, only dumb mistakes.
