front springs issue after triple tree clamp swap
« on: June 06, 2017, 05:33:36 pm »
Hi guys

I think I made a big mistake tonight. I'm in the process of swapping my triple tree clamp, I opened the caps to remove the old triple tree clamp and suddenly, the springs literally jumped out from the forks (bike even fell). Now that I have the new triple tree, it's impossible for me to replace these springs and put the caps back. I hope I didn t do something too bad. Is there an easy fix that does not require rebuilding the forks all over again, attached some pictures

Put a jack under the front bottom of the motor and slowly jack it up to take tension off the front end.  Out it on center stand when you do it and be careful.  Once tension is off, you can compress the fork springs to out the caps back on the fork tubes

Like inno said you need to lift the font end 'til the forks are fully extended. Do you have a garage beam or rafter you could tie on to? Put rope or strap around the handlebars and winch it up. It's going to wobble around a bit without a stand. My wife's VT750 has no center stand and I built a wooden thingy to perform the same function. It slides under the frame and with a wood handle, I rotate it front to back and it lifts onto the wood block. You might want to make one. It'd make lots of maintenance chores easier.

Yeah this has nothing to do with your triple tree...lift the bike or remove the forks (which necessiates lifting anyway) and replace the caps.

With out a center stand , I have used a rear stand and an engine hoist and some tie downs around the frame or triple clamps to lift.

now that the old triple clamp is removed with old gauges and indicators (neutral, beam, oil, etc..), I of course disconnected their wiring from the bucket to be able to remove all the items, I tried to start the bike today and my main fuse blown..is there any link with the items that I removed ? thanks

Maybe if one of the plugs are bare and against the headlight bucket

Yep, all those indicators run on the main fuse circuit.  Make sure you're insulated against grounding out as Jim mentioned.
