Do You Wave
« on: June 11, 2017, 03:01:11 PM »
Just curious to see how many people wave when passing a bike in the opposite direction.  I do.  I have found ~95% of the non Harley riders wave.  I'd say ~95% of the people on Harleys don't wave.  It's been this way since I started riding back in '74.

Just wondering if it's the same all over or regional and why folks on Harley's don't wave.

-P.

I like to do the wave.

When I see another vintage rider I do the old school rebel fist.

That subject comes up ever so often and it is like beating a dead horse....
The reason most Harley riders are perceived as "non-wavers", is because most of them only wave to other Harley guys.
I was on a 220 mile ride today and we met a lot of other bikes, (of course - great weather in Ohio). I think all of them waved.

I wave unless i think its in a unsafe place. Like when i think i might need both hands. But i wave at anyone on a bike and have had good results. I've even had banditos wave back.

Most riders do wave.  but sometimes I have met a large group riders and only the last two or three waved.  Was because I had a Japanese bike? I don't know.
I have a Polaris Slingshot and bikers wave back at me.  Who knows, sometimes I don't wave because I watching traffic or the road and miss the wave.
I do the best I can to wave.

I think most hd riders are afraid to remove their hands from the handle bars due to the massive weight they are trying to control but generally everybody wave back except the posers on their super sports, lol

I wave to everyone whether they wave back or not.  I've always assumed the Harley riders that don't wave, are too engaged trying to keep their "hog" going straight down the road to take a hand off the bars to wave.   ;)

I find HD riders and non HD riders wave equally around here.

Air-cooled VW owners usually wave at each other as well, especially buses. Every once in a while in my bus, I get a wave from a Vanagon owner. I actually used to snub them but now I go ahead and wave back while internally being like "Pffft, loser". Funny thing is, the split window guys are treating me in my bay window the same way.
So much to do, so little time.

I do wave most the time. If i'm on bumps or gravel or a turn, I don't. I nod. I think when they see a big headlight coming, they wave. They don't know what you're riding until you get closer. I'll wave to mopeds, bicycles, anybody really.

I tried a new system on todays ride, return every wave but never instigate. Not sure how I feel about it. I like the "fist" idea, I saw a CBX1000 today and wished I had a way of expressing my extreme approval.

I'm sure geographic location matters.  Most Harley riders in my area wave at everyone on a bike but that's because 95% of the bikes on the road are Harleys so they are just assuming you are a Harley:)

I had my  cb750 on the side of the road and a couple of harleys were coming .
I watched them looking at my bike then look at me. Instantly they snapped their  heads the other way as if they were trying to unlook at my bike.

I think waving is considered a bit gay over here (not that there's anything wrong with that) but nearly everyone nods - in fact most sportsbike riders appear to have perfected a particular 'sideways' nod that I couldn't replicate if I practised in front of a mirror for hours, which I'm not going to but I suspect a lot of them do. Harley riders? 9 out of 10 just look straight on and totally ignore you, don't know why but that's the truth.

The closer I got to Sturgis the fewer waves, but it was the big anniversary and everyone was waved out.  5 or 6 hours away and the waving started again.

People in cars round my way wave all the time.
Sometimes it is a bit disconcerting, you wonder "who was that waving at me?"
I do live in the boondocks of Tasmania, but really? It is not unusual to see a car, even here.

I am a waver or  a nodder, depends on the situation. Anybody around here old enough to remember the clenched left fist thrown into the air ?  I do it now and then just for fun if I see an old Harley coming my way  :D

When I had my 1st Sportster in early 70's the clenched fist was all the rage.  Now it's the 2 fingers down wave.

I wave, most all bikers wave back. It's also a Jeep Thing too. When I am in the Jeep I get
waves and thumbs up because it's an Old School lifted 37" wide tire, 421 SBC.
