« on: June 12, 2017, 12:17:31 AM »
Hi, how's it going?

I de rusted a tank using hydrclauric acid last year and it worked fine....  but what are some ways you have had success with?

I need to do another one.8

Thanks for your time.

I'd start with a litre of diesel, slush it around and see where it gets you. Costs practically nothing and won't do any harm.

I used the works on my Ducati tank a few years ago and it worked brilliantly, but I went to buy some more just yesterday and the bottle color had changed - looked at the % of hydrochloride and it has been cut in half to 9.5%. The old stuff was over 19%. Maybe it'll still work okay, but probably not as good as it use to if it's the new blend. I didn't buy it so I can't comment.

A couple of cups of muratic acid, then fill to the top with water.  You can buy it at Walmart for about 8 bucks and it'll do several tanks.  I've brought back some very rusty ones.  Try starting out by leaving it in for 2-4 hours depending on how rusty it is to start.

Just looked this up - $15.78 a gallon at Home Depot and has 35-45% phosphoric acid. Looks like I'll be picking some up today - thanks for the tip!

Yea, I'm gonna try this next. Sounds promising, and very reusable. Will catch it in a Homer bucket with a lid to store and reuse. That brew is good for a lot of things around a restoration shop.

I favor the elecrolysis method, as it will not remove the parent metal, as acids will, just the rust.
Don't have worry about leaving acid in too long.

White vinegar to the brim for a week, then pressure wash it and fill with gas or slosh wd-40 in it to prevent rust.

Yes. In fact, thats a preferred step for preparing a liner; to first etch the surface after de-rusting.

Redkote won't crack as the others will and is a favorite among racers since things do happen on the track. As I read more about different liners, redkote can be redone or recoated easily where others cannot.

What is the mix ratio? Or do you use this undiluted? Just in that case, it would be an expensive proposal for a 6 gallon tank??

No need to fill the whole tank. I just did one yesterday and used 1 gallon, shaking around every half hour or so. Once the surface is wet, it will start working and inside a tank, it wont dry out.

It worked a little too well in fact, and now my tank is much holier than I originally thought. Getting really sick of super sport tanks. They are all junk.

No.  This is the 550K tank I did last fall.  Disappointed I didnt take a before picture of this one, but it was quite flash rusted.
Prep-n-etch treatment for 4 hours, water wash-out, acetone rinse, and then shopvac dried.

@MikeSimon
I just used 1 gallon of prepnetch, but ive got a bucket filled with old golf balls I add in, to reduce the volume of the tank.  Shake/rotated the tank every half-hour and you're golden. ;D

White vinegar. I bough 4 liters of it from the grocery store for about $5. Dumped it in there with a pack of sheet metal screws. Gave it a good shake a couple times a day, for a few days, came out pristine. This was for a 350F tank that was 100% covered in rust after sitting for over 40 years outside.

I followed up with an acetone rinse, then rinse with gas, and finally a Caswell tank liner treatment.

Hmm, you know, I may have only used acetone, but I can't fully remember since it was a couple years ago. But regardless, the Caswell liner has been 100% ever since!

Distilled water and sand.  $5 total.  I ate a big meal of carbs and protein then shook the crap out of it for 2 hours. Let's say 1 hour for every 10 years of rust  :P.  Rinse thoroughly with hose then dry with shop vac, normal house vac, or air compressor if you have it then fill to the top with gas and install brass element viso-filters if you aren't going to seal it.

Is the Caswell method simpler than the POR15 method? And/or quicker?

Not really. POR15 does give you a 'system' with the alkaline cleaner, etch, and liner. The Caswell kit is just the epoxy and you are left to your devices to clean and prep. POR15 looks like shiny metal, Caswell is clear, you see through to your tank metal. I slightly prefer the epoxy, but I think both are excellent assuming proper prep.

Never used por15, but caswell was dead simple. Cleaned out the tank, mixed the caswell stuff together and poured it in. It was middle of winter so the shop was cold, so I used a heat gun to keep the tank and epoxy warm. I rotated the tank many times for an even coverage. It's been about two years and the tank is 100%
