Honda Dream 50 (new member)
« on: June 13, 2017, 04:19:35 AM »
Hi guys, I've just got myself a Honda Dream 50 (a tribute to the late CR110's). technically I'm on the wrong forum given its a twin cam!!, but wondered if anyone can help?

The bikes CDI limits it to around 35mph, which is pretty painful. Takegawa used to make a replacement CDI, but stopped production.

I wondered if anyone had any experience of this bike and how I could go about removing the limiter in 4th and 5th gears?

It stops revving around 9krpm,

many thanks  8)

Cool!   I've always liked those.

So, does it NOT limit 1st through 3rd gears?

Disconnect the connection between the gear position sensor and the CDI, and hard wire it to think it is in a lower gear.

You are going to need a rev limiter or overrevving will damage the motor. 35 mph is way low...these were race bikes first. Did you buy a german model that was speed limited?
Is the bike's gearing stock?

The Takegawa Hyper CDI you need is part number 07-02-17. It is apparently discontinued but still shows up as available on some stores

e.g. this one in Belgium http://www.daxshop.be/nl/a/daxshop_1_hoofdmenu_takegawa/takegawa-hyper-cdi-voor-honda-dream50/

CMSNL in the Netherlands will let you order it, whether they can get one is another matter. I would wager that some of the Japanese sites will turn up one for you. Here is a thread started by a French guy doing just what you want to do : http://www.forum-auto.com/moto/essais-achats-conseils/sujet379048.htm (in French of course but let me know if you need help translating)
I had the Dream 50R version which had a HRC CDI kit without any limiter, as my neighbours can attest to. The HRC kit may be still available, but no doubt for a scandalous price - part N° 06340-NKR-000

Guys - Thanks so much for the replies. All useful.

The bike is stock - I have done another test today and its actually limited to 60kph so that's 37kph. It was direct from Japan, I think theres a legal requirement for a "moped" to be limited over there.

I've done some work on Jas's idea and found a guy that's done this - look about 3/4's down the page (by the full fairing picture).  http://motor.geocities.jp/love27/dream50.html

It essentially means putting a couple of wires into the CDI connector. I strapped the bike up, stuck it in 5th and hey presto, the limiter is gone. I haven't tried on the road yet.

This method does make me slightly nervous - I have tested if its by passed the rev limiter completely. But it does seem to work.

Vfourfreak, thanks for info, I checked the sites and unfortunately both seem to say out of stock.

Seems I've found a solution but not quite ideal - but seems to work!

My RVF400 is a Japanese import and was speed restricted also. The restriction on these models is implemented in the speedometer, and I used the tip here :

http://www.veaminicori.talktalk.net/Articles/derestriction.pdf

to succesfully derestrict it. Perhaps there is a similar implementation in the Dream 50 ??

Re: Honda Dream 50 speed limiter fix!
« Reply #6 on: September 19, 2018, 08:22:34 AM »
I realize this is a long dormant thread, but just in case the OP still has a problem with the speed limiter I can offer the simple solution which I learned from a Dream 50 Facebook group. Just attach jumper wires to the CDI plug to connect the red/white, white/yellow, and green/red leads. Plug the connector back in and viola, no more rpm limitation in 4th and 5th gears.

I recently acquired a Dream 50 (CB50V) and it came with the Takegawa Hyper CDI which also eliminates the speed limiter. But when I checked with a timing light I was surprised that the Hyper CDI maintains timing at the stock full advance setting at all RPMs. In other words the timing does not retard at idle. That made the idle rough and the bike tended to kick back when starting. I was afraid of damage to the starter pawl or gears so I removed the Hyper CDI and went the jumper wire route. No difference in the full advance timing and the bike idles better. Here's my little gem-

Right now she runs out of breath around 60 but I still have a bit of carb/intake system work to do. The thing is though, being on such a small bike and so low to the ground it really feels way faster!

Is the photo with the lake behind the bike recent? Looks like Berryessa is almost full!

Last winter was dry so it's now ~16' down from full. But after the previous very wet winter it topped out several feet above the glory hole. It was mesmerizing to watch and really drew crowds.

What is a glory hole and what does it do? Does it serve to maintain water level in a lake that is man-made without having a dam?
Thanks! David
PS nice photos

PS nice photos

It's an overflow, located right next to the dam. Limits maximum lake level.

It’s the same thing as a spillway on other dams. Lake Berryessa also has a small generator to make a little power from the mandatory flows out of the dam that keep Putah Creek flowing. The creek has a great catch and release trout fishery as well as some salmon sometimes. The lake is for irrigation, water users and recreation.
