I bought a CB550 Turbo
« on: June 15, 2017, 04:27:54 PM »
A friend of mine called me today and told me he know of a guy that had a Honda 550 with a turbo for sale. I drove over to check it out and it turns out to be a 1975 CB550 with a RayJay turbo on it. I has been sitting inside and hasn't been ridden since 1991. The engine seems to have good compression just by kicking it over and it looks pretty solid. I'm not sure what I will do with it, I guess I bought it because it was different.

I really hate the Harley wheel on the back. >:(

Well thats awesome! I'd love to see it going and I wonder how it would compare to the 650 and 750.

Lucky you, you may need that wheel to keep from frying the tire off.

What kind of horsepower would this put out if it was running perfect? I would like it to be a stock looking 550 with the turbo but I don't care for the Mad Max café style. Is this the same turbo that is put on the CB750 but with less boost and a smaller carb?

Nice, needs a proper seat, bars, and a reverse cone muffler.

Nothing Mad Max or cafe about that bike. You might want to touch bases with Bob3050, as he has been running a 550 turbo for a very long time. ;) He has made some posts lately on the "let's see your SOHC bike on the road" thread.

Looks like the 550 F models had the passenger dog ears like the late K models. I was like wait a minute that is not a 75 Frame.

I am not very Honda smart so I was doing some checking and it appears this is a 1975 CB550F, is this correct? I didn't see the F on the frame number at first. What's the main difference between the K model 550's and the F's?

My '75F has the tube type passenger mounts, not the dog ears that came on my '77 K

It uses different front pegs and kick lever to accommodate the 4-1 exhaust, F's always had the triangle idiot light setup with the key between the gauges that didn't show up on the K until '77, the top triple is slightly different because of the gauge setup. I know there are a couple other minor frame differences too, but can't recall what they are.

Thanks for all the information fellas, I appreciate it. It may be going away next week, a friend of mine wants to buy it and I really don't have time to do anything to it because I'm way busy restoring Kawasakis. I don't even know how to check the oil on this little beast, there is what looks like a return line going in the dip-stick hole.  :o
