Stick coils or pencil coils
« on: November 20, 2022, 01:00:31 AM »
Has anyone successfully used the new "stick" coils that are common on more modern DOHC  water-cooled bikes?  It seems that it would be a natural modification, as they are effectively deep reach plug caps with coils built in.  You'd eliminate the thick plug wires and the coils under the tank.

They usually fit down a deep hole. Mounted atop the plug of a SOHC I think they would be to long and not secure. Probably also not suitable for points or other systems available for SOHCs.

Probably a weird resistance (OK, impedance!). I've heard that running 2 coils from 1 points set is not a good idea, also heard of it being done. But that gets back to the weird resistance issue: even if they are 5 ohms, two in parallel would be 2.5 Ohms.
And is the trigger just the same as for a normal Kettering coil or are they a transformer type coil that works differently?
And of course would they fit onto the 2-3 plugs?

I know people that are running them on V4 Honda's and first generation Kawasaki ZG 1000 Concours. I have a stick coil kit for my Concours that I haven't installed yet.

I assume these are coil on plug, which presumably would require an electronic ignition to trigger them. That also brings the question of electrical draw. Hopefully the ignition gurus will be along with some sound theory because I'm curious also.
