How to fit pelican cases to rack?
« on: June 17, 2017, 06:21:21 PM »
Hi all,

Needing some input as I am not clever enough to figure this out...how to mount pelican cases to the rack...what I would like is to fit pucks on outside of case that somehow slot into the rack and can be opened and closed from inside the case so I can remove case when needed -sort of a quick release system but from inside the case. Anyone got any links for such a product? Thank you! Here are the racks in question...they have brackets at each of the 4 corners...

The racks were custom made by Kevin in South Africa (forum member: ttr400) and are outstanding quality and craftmanship. Kevin supplied all the hardware and did an amazing job in sending me a rack based on a loose description of what I wanted. The side panels and top box portion can all function independently - very cool!  Ill do a full review once I get the cases attached.

Thanks,
Andy

What do the back side of the cases look like? How are they supposed to be mounted?

The hard part is done, you already have the supporting brackets in place. I had to fabricate my supporting brackets before I could address the case attachments. I use a bracket that "captures" the case with a padlock in the case latch:

The cases are Pelican 1510M which are a little bigger than I was looking for. I had decided on the Pelican 1500 cases when I found these 1510's on the local craigslist for $25 each. I almost bought four at that price! Fully loaded with tools they can make the front end light so careful how you load them.

I used "U" shaped hooks on the supporting brackets and tabs with standoffs on the back of the case. The standoffs on the back of the case nestle down in the "U" shaped hooks on the brackets. The "capture" bracket hooks to the support bracket, lays across the top of the case, and a tab on the end of it has a hole for the padlock that is used on the case latch firmly securing the case to the support bracket. Remove the padlock from the case latch and the "capture" bracket swings out of the way for the cases to be lifted from their support like luggage.

The problem is: those exhaust pipes are going to get in the way. I'd be willing to take them away so you could buy something aftermarket. Just trying to help.

Andy,
Just found this post. i have an idea for a quick release fitting kit for the pelican cases, will email you when i get home.
You should have enough clearance in the higher position for the pipes to clear, if not i can make other brackets to push the side frames out further.

Wilbur - great photos and I have long admired your setup - do you have a photo of that setup for the locking mechanism?

Thanks Kevin and I should have mentioned in the original post - will edit it now - that the racks were custom made by Kevin in SA (ttr400) and are outstanding quality and craftmanship. Kevin supplied all the hardware and did an amazing job in sending me a rack based on a loose description of what I wanted. The side panels and top box portion can all function independently - very cool!  Ill do a full review once I get the cases attached.

Kevin - for the height of the side panels its not an issue if I use the second bar down from  the top one to attach to the rack frame (see last photo above)...this seems to work well. If you thoughts on a mounting system then yes would love to hear it.

BTW thanks for the email  - off to reply to that now! So happy to hear the Moscow trip worked out!!
cheers
Andy

Haha my HM300s are going nowhere - see last photo; if I mount on second bar then not an issue  8) I went for a test drive and nothing bumped or bruised so all good so far.
