Just wondering what you all use for storage other than saddle bags. I have a back pack that collapses onto itself, but thinking getting a tank bag and would like to here thoughts. Or post pick of your storage solution.

Do the magnetic one actually hold on good at hyway speeds?

So far mine does, just make sure the pads are clean before you stick it on your tank or you may scratch your paint.

That makes me feel better about buying one. I've thought about before and now i guess its time to bite bullet, so to speak.

I have never had my tank get scratched by a tank bag. But like he said I always make sure the bottom is clean.  I have never a tank bag even move at all at speeds over 130mph.  But I buy nice tank bags not cheap ones.

I was just looking and for some name brand, decent looking - bells and whistles, etc.  $85-$150

Depending on what you want.  Also saw some for 20 bucks.

$85 is not that bad if its made good. I've seen people get ridiculous.

I have a tank bag and used it when my previous green tank was in use.  But I just can't do it now with my other tank that I brought back from the dead in new blue paint.  I busted my butt doing a good paint job on that tank.  So I strap the tank bag to my luggage rack behind me instead.  The only thing I miss doing this is viewing my small battery powered clock through the clear plastic window in the bag.

  If it was a long ride, I might consider using it on top of the tank but I have not had a ride like that so far with the new paint job.

I made my own tank bag in 1973 (from Naugahyde, had to hunt and shoot the Nauga myself...), because I could not find one I liked. It reaches from my seated crotch to the middle of the gas cap, is the width of the CB750 tank, has 4 short web straps (cut from a long tie-down web strap that also gave its life for my bag) with little metal clips that latch over the lower lip of the tank on the sides. I dipped them in rubber (that stuff made for dipping plier handles, etc.) coating. The straps are sewed to (2) elastic straps that lets them stretch about 2" total travel to clip onto the tank with springiness. Each elastic strap is then sewed in 8 places to the bottom of the tank bag. On the front of the bag is the zipper, because I have a Vetter fairing to stop the driving rain: without that, the zipper would be backward(!), and it closes a "C"-shaped opening that peels open 1/3 of the length of the bag. On the top I sewed a clear sheet for holding maps (remember those?) and toll-booth tags. I'll see if I can find it in my attic and maybe take some pix of it: I've modified it several times over the years. On the bottom of it used to be some sheepskin: I don't remember if that is still there.

After about 50,000 miles (in 6 years) of riding with nearly 30-40 lbs of stuff in this bag, it finally wore the top layer of Honda's paint off the tank, showing the red under the green that comprised the Garnet Brown Metalflake OEM color. I thought surely it would dent the tank: nope, never has!

I have a very old RKA tank bag, which I like a lot.  Mine has strap loops for the frame and quick release plastic latches, rather than magnets.  It's all padded or synthetic fur isolated from the tank surface.  Haven't found any paint damage yet.  But, dust can get under it.  So, I vacuum it during tune up cycles.
The exact one I have isn't made anymore.  But, they surely have one that will serve your needs.  Made in USA, too.

My tank bag from the 80's had a bottom part strapped on the tank. A bottom plate where I made hole for the fuel cap. Then fastened the bag with a zipper around. The bag it self was expandable with a zipper. It did not scratch tank. It had to be unzipped when filling gas. Max speed was 210kph on the speedo, mostly 150-180.

It worked as a fairing when the wind was reduced on my body by the bag.

I bought a decent set of saddlebags and a tank bag all for $75 on CL. I still use them a lot. I believe the tank bag is Cortech, no issues with it coming off or moving around at high speed and it won't scratch the tank. Get one with a clear phone pocket on top so you can use it for GPS.

Which brand is that? That's kind of the one I'm looking at. I'm old - I like paper maps and that has the map holder.

Magnetic is no problem at all, and if you're savvy and patient, you can pick up a decent one brand new for $30 (CANADIAN in my case!).

They have a strap you're supposed to clip around the steering head, but I've never done it, and never had any issues at all. Only time I've had one slide a bit on me is when I DROPPED my Concours, and while picking it up I moved the bag. But it's magnetic, move it back and away I go...

I purchased a new Eclipse(USA)tank bag in the late 90's before they went out of business(China competition  ,no comparison in quality to them) and used it a couple times,it's in storage now.I like it a lot for when I take long trips,has plenty of room and a map case.The bag is still like new which shows that I haven't taken enough long trips yet.. A tank bag is the best place to put stuff if you can fit it in inside.
I'll take a pic of it when I get to storage.

Eclipse did make a great bag, had a large map pocket.  You most likely can find one on Ebay reasonably priced.  No problems with either the strap on or magnetic.  I've had both, magnetic is easier since it is easy on/easy off....Larry

I use an RKA bag as well.  Love it.  The thing will not move around on the tank no matter what I do.  Other tank bags would start shifting.

I had the magnetic Eclipse bag also Larry,they are both expandable.I switched-over to a fiberglass fuel tank on my VFR so I sold the magnetic Eclipse 15 yrs. ago,I still have the one that straps onto the tank and steering head.
