Main Electric Died Running
« on: June 24, 2017, 10:45:10 AM »
750K6

I was riding, everything seemed fine, had the bike for 15 years, always runs great... and all electrics just plain stopped while running.

Checked all the fuses and tried spares just to see. Nada. Checked battery, still good.

By chance made a connection between the 15A @ 7A fuse connections and the bike came back online so long as that contact was made. (Was able to limp home half a mile.) While this connection exists, the starter switch will cut off circuit, but the starter motor will not start- bike starts fine with kickstarter. Everything else electric works fine. While this connection exists, key does not turn off electrics.

My first thought is a short / broken connection in the starter motor circuit... but that's a guess.

Any advice welcome. :) Thanks in advance.

It's probably the fuse box itself.

Look at the back of it for melted solder connections.

Common problem with these aged components.  The fuse clips get a transparent surface oxidation which is resistive.  Passing current through this heats the contacts, and either melts the fuse or the solder on the back of the box.
It is preventable by simply polishing the fuse clips every ten years or so.

If the plastic isn't melted you can restore the fuse box.  If it is melted, a replacement is required.

Thanks, Two-Tired.

Without clipping the wires and resoldering the connections, they appear good. No melting.

One of the fuse holders on the main did break along an edge when pulling it out, so I'll probably order a new assembly anyway, but I don't think that's the problem... tried just making a direct connection. No dice.

Any other guesses?

Ding! We have a winner.

Black line solder connection on the ignition has broken. Looks like poor solder job from the start. I wouldn't have checked that sooner because the ignition appeared to work when making the fuse connection.

Well, I was going to order a whole new key set anyway. That, and I guess a new fuse box now. ;)

Thank you, gents.

I've already replaced the ignition once- I do have the original part, but the key was so loose in it that the key could fall out.

The aftermarket part was clearly not as good, though I could re-solder the connection.

But I want one key fits all, so I will order a kit.
