bike running horribly, eventually dying.
« on: June 24, 2017, 04:59:21 AM »
I noticed yesterday I had a loose spark plug, I tightened it and my bike was starting right away again. I had my studs for the headers to mount to repaired because I damaged number 1 and 4. I took out all the spark plugs and numbers 1 and 4 were the worst, very dirty with black soot and the other had to be replaced based on the manual.I replaced all 4 of them. I did adjust the bottom nut on the bottom throttle cable adjuster on the carb but that shouldn't have done anything. The motor just sounds like its struggling the entire time.

This bike has been at the mechanic to maintenance this season and was running wonderfully 6 hours ago.

If your spark plugs are black and sooty 1 and 4 its running rich.....carb problem...check floats and fuel level in bowls.....were 2 and 3 ok

If the bike was running wonderfully 6 hours ago, what did you change since then( and why !! )

I replaced all plugs, the culprit was the connection of the wire from the coil to the resistor cap, #1 and #4 came right off in my hand... I stuck and twisted them back on and this bike is running better than ever....its been the problem all this time.

So what is the current issue?

Cylinders 1/4 and 2/3 are paired together for spark. One of the points and one coil for each pair. Usually if there's an issue with 1/4 or 2/3 then it is a coil or points issue.

Electrical connections won't cause a sooty spark plug.  being too rich will.

Sooty spark plugs misfire due to the carbon deposits and it gets worse with more run time.

New plug clean = runs better...until they soot up again.

I don't think you've found the source of the problem, yet.  Just a temporary fix.  Better carry extra new spark plugs with you so you can make it back home.

I was thinking weak spark for incomplete burn.
