My longest trip so far has been about 1800 miles.  Being somewhat lazy, I didn't change the oil.  Now looking at longer trips, what's the best way to do this on the road?

I [used to] take an empty oil container with me, and when oil change time came I would buy 3 quarts. Then I would drain the tank into my 1 empty bottle, pour in one new one, do this again 2x times more. It's not a perfect change because some gets mixed, some is still in the sump and filter housing, but is gets more than 60% of it and lets you take the 3 full ones to the local auto parts store for their recycle tank, while leaving another empty one in your poke.

I used to go to a grocery store and buy one of those tin turkey pan things. You know those one time use pans? Perfect for a catch pan! Easily fits 4L of oil. Drain it all out, pour new oil in, then drain the on into your now empty bottles. It helps to have a funnel here.

On trips like these you can double interval periods easily. There's so much misunderstanding about oil.

I never changed oil on my trips with my CB750. Usually between 5000km and 6000 km. Devide it with 1.6 to get miles.
Engine runs warm and smooth during long passes. Good oil will most likely be ok for even longer distances. 10.000km if oil temp is under control, why change?   

I change oil in my car just before 15.000 km. not much more oil in that engine that is turbo charged.

That's what I have always done.

And that's the reason. When Honda wrote the maintenance scedules (around 1969!), they had to take into account what the worst or simplest oil was in any of their markets like Zambia or other third world countries. Oil has improved tremendously since then.
