How do you get wheel bearings out - rear wheel CB750K5
« on: June 27, 2017, 06:05:21 pm »
I have a 1975 CB750K with what I think are the original bearings so I decided to replace them.  I have a blind hole puller and cannot seem to even budge them.  I drilled (4 holes) the retainer and removed it.  So, any suggestions?  Bigger slide hammer?  Heat?  Soak with penetrating fluid?

Thank you for any advice you can provide.

John

They are pounded out from the opposite side. There is a sleeve in the center of the rear hub. You bend one of the tabs and run a rod in there to drift out the bearings.

There is 3 bearings in the rear. 2 wheel bearings and a carrier bearing. Take a look at a parts book and you will see the spacer you need to move to the side so you can pound on the bearing with a long punch. Never had to use heat on any of mine. Better yet, get the Hondaman book and it will walk you through it. Hondaman is a member on this board.

A BFH and a rod slightly smaller than your axle. Put the rod in from opposite side at an angle and hit it. Making sure to move around the bearing so it drives out straight instead of getting cocked.

Alternatively, you can use a long pointed drift and jam it with a screwdriver. That way you don't have to bend your spacer.

Following przjohn's method (http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,149230.msg1702391.html#msg1702391), I popped out my bearings. Didn't need to heat the hub, either. Just a nice big punch, and a screwdriver jammed in there, a few taps with the 5lb mallet, and POPPED right out.

Did it with a blind puller and some heat.  Two propane torches applied to the outside of the hub for about 3 minutes did the trick.

I was a little hesitant to bend the spacer to pound them out from opposite sides.  I have Mark's book and saw that but also in the book is the suggestion of the blind hole puller so I got one.  The slide hammer that came with it is small so maybe a larger one.  If I cannot get it to work I will push the spacer over (bending the tabs, I can fix them later) and pound out with a drift.

I have not yet looked st the front but assume I will have the same, or similar problems.

Thank you for the responses.
