It appears photobucket now wants $399 a year to enable third party sharing of photos.  Virtually all my photos on this forum are on PB, so my apologies for the missing photos as I won't pay the greedy SOBs that much.

Just got a email and link for this BS money-grab.  It looks like you can go cheaper to $60 per year to get third-party hosting, but that is still a far cry from free.  They are going to lose a huge membership share, and then their value will crash.

Not sure about "best" but I have been using Google photos for years mostly because I did not care for the Photobucket interface. It was just a matter of personal preference for me. Google does have its own sort of "wonkiness" and occasionally I will have trouble getting images to display when merely linked, but aside from the occasional frustration it's still free (for now).

Anyone know how to retrieve photos that are stored there?  I would like to put them into a file on my computer...LARRY

it's the same on another forum that i'm on. all PB photos are disappearing...
i'm using google photos which has been fine so far. others have had success with flickr.

The user would still have access, so it would be up to each user to "repair" the broken link by either uploading the missing photos as attachments or creating new links from a different sharing site. Of course, paying the "ransom" for all of the photo links now being held hostage is another option, but I think what they've done goes beyond playing dirty and the photos that had been freely linked for years and years should have been grandfathered in with the new business model only affecting newly shared photos IMHO.

The $60 option does not include third party photosharing, nor does the $99 option.

I don't know how many photos I have on this forum, but it is a considerable number.  Replacing all the links would be a huge task for something that would only be looked at occasionally by somebody.  Even deleting the posts containing my photos to clean things up would be a very large chore.

Agreed. Photobucket has changed the rules and effectively crippled a large number of online forum archives that rely on those linked images. I will probably start uploading images as attachments to supplement any linked images from now on so when Google photos jumps on the image hostage taking bandwagon at least the newer posts with linked images will have the photos attached as well.

Photobucket has revoked "free image linking" and now wants $400/year to be able to remotely host images on another site (like this one) via a link. Any image linked to Photobucket from here (or any other forum or blog for that matter) is no longer available. Those photos are now being held hostage...

Bad news... if all the pics are lost in all the good threads here, that would be horrible.

The email I got from them was in my spam folder.  The photos are still available on photobucket.  I just spent an hour saving all the photos I wanted into a folder on my computer.  I will host them somewhere else.  I would guess that photobucket may change their mind when very few people actually pay the fee.  I am planning to delete my pictures individually from their site once I get them hosted somewhere else.  If you took the picture then you hold the copyright to it.  Don't let photobucket use your copyrighted material if this is how they treat their partners.  Yes, even though the service is free we still provide the content that drives traffic to and from photbucket which makes us partners.  It is simple, no content = no advertisers which is photobucket's true customer.  They will wither and die if they continue to treat their partners this way.  Flickr is probably laughing their asses off.

A very stupid, shortsighted decision.  If they needed more revenue, they could have charged a $1 per month and they would have had more people stay rather than endure the annoyance of creating your content on another hosting service.
