Photobucket could have been less greedy -- maybe going for $12-20 per year.  That would have retained many more users.  Each user is captive to their ads, which they already get revenue from.

Or have different tiers - $50, $100, $200 depending on your needs.

Do you guys remember Netflix did a similar move a few years back?  Raised their rates to a level that seemed excessive and they lost a huge percentage of their customers (including me).  They later lowered their rates...

They do have different tiers. The $400 top tier is the only one that provides the 3rd party hosting.

I don't sign on to the forum for a day and all the pictures disappear?!? Really hoping PhotoBucket realizes how many users they're about to lose and reverses this move. Now I've got to update all of my builds.

Flickr account created.  I moved my photos over but have not edited all my build posts to restore photos.  Just my most recent build 650/550.  This sucks!  Photobucket can suck it!

What if Flickr pulls the same #$%*?? Glenn has given his blessing for posting pics as an attachment, so this won't happen in the future.

Can't post videos on this site - so a hosting site is required if that's something you want to do.

The picture policy on SOHC4 is very generous, but I can see why posting clips would be too much.

I don't see where the advertising analogies or explanations fit here? When a pic is 3rd party hosted on a forum there is no direct link to view advertising on Photobucket's site unless you go back to the original link? I just view the photos on this site and others and never go back to Photobucket's site where they were linked from so I don't understand how you can say that Photobucket got so many views of advertisers? I totally disagree with $400 but can see how this business model in all of the internet is starting to come into question.

If you click on a photobucket-hosted image on a thread (and not just view the photo in the thread), it will open Photobucket into a new tab or window.  That will expose you to advertising.  Also, as a user, when you upload, view, download, or obtain imbed links you are viewing advertising -- unless you are paying a premium member rate.

Because of the way they went about this I won't pay them a penny a year for their service. For well under $400/yr I can build a mini ITX computer, pay for a domain, and host my own. That project is now on the list.

One forum I'm on had an issue during an upgrade that hosed all hte pictures, hence i preferred to host outside of forums. It really messed up the usefulness of previous posts, specifically restoration threads.

For $5 a month you can spin up a site to host you images over at Digital Ocean.  You won't even need a domain name, just use the server IP to point your image links.

There is no limit to the attachment size; just a limit of 50 attachments per post.  I much prefer that people post photos as attachments here so that they never disappear from our message threads.

I'm committed to keeping this information freely available; I can't say that for the other services that are out there.  If performance or space becomes an issue, I will upgrade the server I use to host this site.

My recommendation to everyone who has hosted images on photobucket looking to move them elsewhere is to  move them here so there will be no worries in the future.
