Safety Nannies Are Coming
« on: December 13, 2006, 03:03:04 AM »
I wonder if we'll be able to take our kids for a ride on our bikes. It seems to me that if a kid must be in a booster seat till he's 4'9" they wouldn't allow him on a motorcycle till they were 16.

Well I feel that a kids should be able to reach the pegs if they are going to ride. I voted 3'9". My oldest daughter is over the 3'3" mark and is only 3years old. Yet even on the honda 50s, she is not quite tall enough to ride on of those. ride on the bike with me? no way. Being able to put your feet on the pegs is very important. it allows you to stay on the bike better and slide around less. Of course there should be some type of limit but it must be common sense not politics that determines the limit.

Unfortunately, common sense isn't nearly as common as we would all like it to be and that's probably source of most of the laws we all think are stupid and overdone.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

There used to be clamp on pegs for kids (waaaay back in he 50's 60's) this isnt a new phenomenon.
I remember being squashed between mum and dad (around 1960) before that was made illegal

Eldar, you want to come and see some of the loons out here in Thailand ;D

Most of the local girls tend to ride pillion on one form of bike or anotherĀ  If they've got short skirts 8) on they will ride side saddle. Invariably they are reading, chatting on the phone, eating or drinking (or any combination of same), anything but watching where they are going. They hardly ever hold on to the riders, or bikes, with their hands, and never have their feet on the the pegs (the flip flops or strappy stilettos they all wear wouldn't afford much grip there anyway). The riders bob and weave through traffic at insane speeds, yet these girls never fall off :o

To my mind either they are born with a phenomenal sense of balance (most orientals are actually, see the size of their big toes), or they have developed superb control over certain muscles in the lower abdominal area that help them grip the seat ;D

Having born witness to some of the nightclub 'entertainment' in this part of the world, my opinion tends toward the latter 8) :o ;D

Back on subject, I personally don't think it can be governed by height alone, age and ability must have some bearing. My neice is 3'6 at 5 years old and is extremely competent on a pushbike already (to the extent that my 18 year old stepson is trying, at her insistence, to teach her how to wheelie :o ::)), she would probably grasp the basics of a little 50cc twist 'n' rip quite quickly. In contrast, a friends son, who is 12, and just shy of 5', is not safe left in charge of his own feet, let alone something with wheels on it.

Just hold on a few months and Tony B. Liar will make it illegal to ride a motorbike or drive a car while breathing (unless of course you are a Member of Parliament or related to him)
I am amazed that he has not been assassinated yet.

I'm calling the ACLU, by these standards based on height the "vertically challenged" AKA midgets wouldnt be allowed to ride

THIS prejudice WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!!

(BTW this is a joke, i hate the ACLU)

well she is also 5. my daughter is only 3. She can ride a pedal bike fine. My opinion comes from my dirt bike days. I was not allowed to ride till I could pick the bike back up off the ground. So for this you had to be tall enough and strong enough.

I saw a midget on a pocketbike. It just looked sooo right.

I just can't believe they make kids who a 4 foot 8 inches ride in a booster seat in a car. That's just crazy. I don't know how they even let adults ride these damn motorcycles without a seatbelt.
