GGG Guh Gold wing Fuh fuh fever.
« on: June 30, 2017, 08:52:58 PM »
I have been working on a 76 GL1000 ,giving it a bit of a cafĂ© treatment to it. I used a Victory V92 rear fender for the tail and made mounts that would be hidden and no bolts come into contact with the paint on the exterior. Being a painter, that was a priority.  :) The seat pan is a modified stock glass pan that is secured partially using stock mounts and one rear anchor that is accessed under the tail section.

I am running a HD Vrod headlight from Drag Specialties. I think I am going to cut off the flange for the turnsignals on the headlight mouting brackets and flip them upside down between the trees. That should drop the headlight a bout 1.5 inches. Intakes from Randakk's and Webers from Pierce Manifolds. What a fiasco getting real Webers these days.

The bike is presently torn down for blasting and paint. Then on to the motor.

The white 76 is a recent purchase that I just could not pass up. Just needed typical carb rebuild. 14000 miles and very clean stock bike for the most part. Some little stuff missing...signals, radiator shrouds.

I'm actually disappointed to see that you painted it. Sulfur Yellow was a one year only color and is prized by Goldwing guys. You could have sold the set for decent coin and picked up replacement body parts (can't call them tins since only the top of the shelter is metal) in a different color (or colors) to repaint.

Well your disappointment would have been much less had you seen the condition they were in.  Ton of ABS repair on side covers and the tank top shelter was shot from someone using a screw driver to pry open the lock.  No one would have wanted them in their condition.  Not like the cant be repainted the same color.   :)  The white bike is a completely different bike, in case you are confused there.

Working on paint schemes.  All the blasting should be done by weekend.

Nice pair...your 76 white one...could you share how much it was purchased for? The early wings are going for very good money...didn't know with needing work if that would change.

I like the early gl1000 and gl1100s naked...
Sulfur Yellow is a gorgeous color I think.

David,
I stole this for 500 bucks.  It needed the typical carb rebuild and a rear clutch shaft seal.  But at 14k milage, it has a long life ahead of it.

How big a gun did you use to scare them bad enough to sell it for $500! ?

Wow, you and DonR seem to be in the right places to find ones like these.

They were asking 600, but told me if I came over and loaded it up, they would take 500.  They were in process of moving.  Got lucky, no guns needed.

The funny part of the story is...I was out riding the CBR600 and took a pit stop at a local brewery for a taste of a new stout they whipped up.  While sipping, I ran across this GW on Facebook Marketplace.  Contacted the guy 5 minutes after he posted, told him I was racing home and loading up the trailer.  By the time I had gotten there, he said he had close to 25 more messages from others wanting the bike.  I understand why.  So the lesson here is...sometimes it pays to drink.

That is funny!  Just teasing about the gun,  someone wanted you to have that bike.  You will have to do some good photos on your paint work.  Maybe we can learn more watching your process.  One of the things I loved about rc car racing (on-road stuff) was coming up with fun paint schemes. Doing 18th scale a few years I started treating them like replicas on a few.  We went through plenty of bodies as there was enough rubbing going on...
Organized a Ferrari Challenge for our clu's race and we were able to acquire bodies and sponsorship from a fellow who made them and other bodies.  It was fun!
I did three schemes, Scorpion Racing,  a silver with orange checkers fade behind front wheel and orange prancing horse on hood, and I can't even remember what my scheme was...  my kids were racing with me some weekends.  They were based on images from the F360 Ferrari Challenges.  It was fun but the intricate work could be a challenge at that scale with 3/32 squares on the checkers.

The seat on the white bike looks like the one on my 79 but after I trimmed the foam. It was peaked in the center and sloped toward the tank, it almost neutered me going to Sturgis. I got a hacksaw blade after I got there and changed the shape so it cradled my legs more and didn't slide me towards the tank.
If you notice any of the above symptoms don't take a long trip until it's solved. L0L!

Ya. that RC stuff can be tricky, especially if  you want to do it all in reverse on the inside of the shell.  I use computer masking for a lot of my paint work, which prevents cutting on surfaces and such.  I just painted another set of GL1000 parts for a friend of mine.  Made the masks for the striping and side logos.

Rebuilt the carbs for the white 76.  They are pretty close with out sync.  But will be getting a good tuning in the next few days.  Went through the plug wires and caps and discovered they were intermittent at best.  Fixed the all up.  Just have to replace rear seal off clutch adjustment rod. Fun bike to ride.

For sure. But still a step up from the race pad seat I had on my 750 Supersport.  I have a few more bugs to work out before I take it on a longer ride.
