I should finish up this CB500 by June/July and start on the CX toward the end of summer.  Maybe I'll try to talk you out of that seat eventually!

It was a good weekend, got the new rear sprocket so I was able to install rear tire, chain,and assorted parts, got the exhaust on, finished some bugs in the starter wiring, kick stand installed,  hand controls mounted, headlight installed, and set the points, still waiting for the original seat.....

Not sure your overall levels with the 450 DOHC engine, saw you had the covers off to do valve adjust.  Anyways, really have to watch with rocker arms.  They are extremely wear sensitive.



The three killers of the 450.

1.  Not keeping the valve adjust perfect.
2.  Even slightly low oil.
3.  Letting it idle on the side stand.

1 is fairly obvious, 2 and 3 are related.  Simply put, you have a tall and big head with a small oil piston oil pump.  So just sitting, it cannot feed enough oil to the whole cam.  So if you start, you run.  If not are revs and upright, you are wearing the engine hard.  Such an amazing engine, just that the engineers neglected the oiling unfortunately.

Thanks for the info, and no I haven’t started it since the clean up, I want to go over the valves, points, and cam chain adjustment again just to be sure, I’ll go with the points on the first few start ups then transfer to hondamans ignition later......

Very nice looking bike. I took my first road trip on a blue 1968 CB 450. Road from Lawrence, Ks to Colorado, in 1974. It ran good, and was running great when I sold it 10K later. Wish I still had it.

Well I’ve got the original seat back on and have been working out some small bugs, but all in all this bike is turning out pretty good, have tried to post photos with no luck, something about file size being too big, same camera and photos as before....
