clip ons on CB 750 and left switch turning
« on: July 01, 2017, 11:58:52 AM »
Hi all

I fitted my CB 750 with clip on bars (see picture) but my left switch is now constantly moving and turning. How did you guys managed to hold it still if like me you mounted clip on handlebars ? thanks for the help

It should clamp down tight enough.  Maybe your wiring is preventing it from clamping down properly?

No, but you will have to cut a clearance/slot in the bottom half of the switch body for the wiring to exit.  You can use anything from a file to a die grinder to do this.  77/78 model 750's already have this slot as they did not have the wiring inside the bars.  Also, if your controls still have the little locating pin, you will need to remove that.  Pull it out with some pliers.CB750 Four Cafe Racer 192 by Sean Barney, on Flickr

well even if doing that, the switch keeps turning around the handlebar, which is quite dangerous given that my clutch is then moving all around. Is there something I can come out with to make it stand still ? thank. you

Have you tried a wet or dry sandpaper shim?

Thinking your bar might be undersize or the control body oversize.

Put the abrasive sheet coarse side to the smoothest surface like a shim and reassemble.

I just thought of some 3M drywall sanding screens that have abrasive on both sides.  Seems that might work for you.  Just cut a patch to size and insert between control body and bar.  Hardware store.  I haven't done this, mind you.  But, seems it would work.

The alternative, it would seem, is to make the clam shell fit tighter by removing metal from the bar control so it will clamp tighter.

Your choice.

Hi

sorry to come back on this old post, but i'm still not getting any solution. My left switch keeps turning around the handlebar and it is quite dangerous as i don't find the clutch sometimes and need to keep adjusting the switch to be able to drive.

Here is a picture of the inside of the switch. Do you know what is pointed by a red arrow ? Can i drill my left handlebar clip on and put a screw to avoid switch to slide ? thank you

The hole looks to be where a small bracket attaches...BICBW   Its meant to hold the wires secure and out of the way.

Are your wires all chewed up?  ???

Yes wires are a mess need to fix them, but its much easier to do than holding still the switch

Have you tried a wet or dry sandpaper shim?

Better yet, go to a skate shop and get a scrap of grip tape -- it's sticky on one side, sandpaperish on the other.

But I'm with others -- I've done this countless times and never had a problem with controls moving after rerouting wiring and removing the pin.

What is the OD of your bars?   all of our controls are for 7/8" bars, right?
if the halves dont close together, it wont grab the bar.  Something is preventing the halves from coming together if you clip-ons are 7/8"

halves close together, but are not tight enough to grab the bar, here is the issue i think (see picture), previous owner grinded too much to let wires pass through

I would go right to the skateboard grip tape.   Ingenious idea.

From the looks of that grind job ... you better get a big roll of grip tape !  ;)

You may want to consider just replacing the entire control.
