CB550F Timing Question
« on: July 24, 2017, 08:30:52 AM »
I have a 75 Cb550F

the test light I used is a 12-36V unit with needle and alligator clip which turns green with appropriate voltage and also red which i assume means under 12V. I was checking the timing on the bike with all the electricals on but couldn't get any light from the test light, I checked it with the battery and it lit right up, I placed the needle part on the ground of the battery and the clip on the 1-4 point, the part that opens and closes but on the side that stands still, and on the screws around the point but wouldn't get any light from the test light, also cranked the engine a bunch of times.

Am I placing the light in the wrong place, Not turning something on, not getting enough voltage for the test light or something else completely? I looked up some videos and read the manual and if someone could post a pic of the exact place to put the alligator clip that would be awesome.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not familiar with your specific test light.  But, assuming you have the key switch on and the Run-Stop-Run bar switch in the run position, then each point set should  have voltage on the points post where the condenser connects when ever the point contacts are open. This voltage should be near the battery voltage. The point base plate should be at battery NEG potential.

Can you confirm this voltage is there under the stated conditions?
