The mars look like someone put them there as a check off of what service has been done as the bike was worked on over a period of time.  Kind of like "I better mark this fork leg so I don't forget I replaced the seal already"

Real nice bike!  I would keep it as these bikes in good stock or close to stock condition are getting hard to find.

What is the coating on the upper frame rails/valve cover?  Almost looks like paint overspray.  Hopefully it comes off easily.

-P.
I thought it was dust at first. But it does look like over spray. But I'm not sure.

Ridem32, it's dust. The frame has the clear coat still on it and looks brand new.

If you want to start a personnel collection then keep the good stuff and sell the junk.Good original bikes are where the money is at.If profit is a motivation then that one should do well. No fun having it around if its going to be worrisome with children, dangers of other types, etc..

Children are my worry. For instance, tonight we had my 2 girls, and the neighbors 4 kids running around. They were in my garage. I had to run and put a stop to that. If it were for profit,  I wouldn't be buying 750s. In WI bikes are not as valuable as other states. I had an addiction for these after my first 550. My wife is telling me to keep so I believe I will move forward with changing the fork seals and the dent removal attempt. I really appreciate everyone's opinions.

what if you got some 2x's and built a garage within a your garage?  more like a crate you can roll it into when the kids are running wild.  build it in a back corner and you'll only have to build one wall and a gate/door.  throw down a 2x4x10 pt for a bottom plate, 2x4x8's for the wall studs, fence boards horizontally to keep the bike safely out of reach.

Hmm. That could be easily made. I also have a nice size shed that is wired however no heat. I may have to consider making a wooden safe for it!

a wired shed?  if you have a window in it pop a $100 heat/ac unit in there and done.  if no window cut a hole in the siding and with a  couple 2x4s frame up the area around the hole and put the unit in there.

This is the first bike that I purchased with true history. Not from someone flipping a bike. I have the original paperwork from the sale in 1973 to include the Honda warranty card. The P.O. drained all fluids minus oil.
Know what you mean Tews. I have a copy of the original 1974 invoice on the K4 I bought several years ago and a good history trail on it also. It's a all original survivor just like your K3 but mine was stored for nearly 30 years with gas left in it and engine was stuck so it took some work to get mine going unlike yours. Just adds something to a bike when you run across one like that IMO. These bikes are getting fewer and fewer so just hold on to it and ride it some and enjoy it. I know kids will be kids, I raised two boys. But Im sure you've got good kids so just sit down with them and tell them what you expect of them when it comes to this bike with no if, and's, or buts and everything  will be ok.

Really, a wooden safe? Ride em, don't hide em!    I'm with Terry on this, it's not that special of a bike, maybe worth $5000-6000?   If it were a Sandle or a K0, different story.  Plus, it's not "mint", has over 11K miles and has a good size dent and I'm sure a few other minor flaws.   Sounds like you are not that attached to it if you are even considering selling it, I have NEVER considered selling my Z1.
What I really don't understand is you bought a brand new bike recently, aren't you concerned about that bike too?   Just make the garage (or at least half of it) off limits to kids.

You are correct Stev-0 in regard to the new bike (vfr). I'm not really worried as it's new. I'm seeing the 750 as a time capsule that has been preserved. Also you are right in regard to attachment. I built attachments with the bikes I've had to work on for a long time to get running properly and to looks decent from 10' away. This one is dang near turn key. Once it's complete I will decide then I guess as in what I shall do.

I guess my first  question is are the markings original?
Don't think so, they look like something a repair person might make.
FWIW, mine has markings inside the cases just like cycle rangers, and those are original.

Quote
Do I stop all cleaning the bike to preserve the originality?
Don't fret about it. Make it nice. Ride it a bit, when you want. Patina is nice, rust dirt dents not nice. Can your PDR guy do anything with the fender? Mine has a couple dings from extended garage storage.

Quote
Do I dare ponder selling?
Not unless you lose interest or need it gone or need the dough desperately. I was fortunate I always had a place in the garage for mine and never needed the $500 a dusty and faded K1 might have brought in 1985. Yours is nicer but will the $5000(??) it brings pay for a year at Wisconsin?

it's certainly a bike to be excited about.  i would call it "nearly mint" again.  go for the crate.  the bike is important to you.  the one i bought for $400 that i'm working on is important to me.

Get a good bike cover and put a thick comforter under/over it. Don't worry so much and enjoy it. It's a great bike but not the only one left, it's better that it be taken care of and ridden like it was meant to.

I got so lucky to find a sandcast I could afford and now know it's complete history, it's going to pass 10,000 miles someday soon and that's a worry, but I love to ride it and it deserves to be ridden and not sit in a museum.

I've got a 1942 Colt 1911; I know it's full history.  All serials match and it has the original spring.  I will never sell it and I shoot it.

On the crate frame? Put lockable wheels on the bottom like a grill and just wheel the crate around the bike, wherever it is parked.

It is a SWEET bike in great condition.  Well done.

Seems to me that the bike got lucky and found a really good home with an owner who will love and cherish it! I would at least keep it under a bed sheet and avoid parking it in the sun for prolonged periods.
Oh, and when you are working on something else in the shed move the bike out of harms way to somewhere safe (don't ask me why I know this!).

I am complimenting you.  The rest of the story can be taken at least a couple different ways...just food for thought..   ofreen has commented in this thread.  Think about his bike.  Just another tired old 750, except that it is possibly the tiredest 750 ever! And still getting more tireder all the time!

As far as tired goes, the bike is doing better than me. ;D

Keep the bike locked in a space where the kids cannot enter. Build a cage for it with alarm....
You will regret selling a real survivor with original parts. My bike look good too but thanks to new parts.
A real original bike is something else. I'm sure those will be very attractive for collectors.

Yeah mate, only yellow paint. The black marks were probably made by an owner, or mechanic. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

My K6 is all original and still has all the yellow marks on the bolts. Lot's of people ask about that, thinking it's Loctite or something.
