Rhinebeck AMCA National Meet
« on: July 02, 2017, 07:20:11 AM »
This weekend was the National meeting of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. This is the second time I entered my bike for judging, first time it earned "junior first", which is 90 points or higher in the restored category. This qualifies for "senior" category, 95 points or higher, with more stringent criteria. The restored category is tough, because the bikes are judged against how the bike appeared as new....down to every nut and bolt. I knew going it that I wouldn't get a perfect score, but should be close. I got dinged for tires (expected as I'm running modern tires) over polished engine covers and fork legs,(clear coat gone) and a couple of minor details, such as the front hub finish had yellowed a bit, as had the rear brake cover. But, I passed, and qualify for the final phase "Winner's circle" next year. Some I suppose can't see the point in all this, but I am competitive to a fault (when the doctor said my blood pressure was too high, I asked "what's the record?) but I've had fun, cleaning, polishing, searching for parts. Sometimes, it's just the solitude, me, my bike, and for a short period here and there, no worries or problems. I know I can't keep this thing forever, and someday, I'll pass it along to a new owner ...which bike would you buy, one with an unknown history, etc. or one that has been gone over by a panel of qualified, knowledgeable judges? But, today...I'm a happy camper.

Beautiful bike, congratulations. My brother and I were going to ride up yesterday, but the threat of thunderstorms scrubbed those plans. Of course, no rain fell at all. We made up for it today.

Thanks everyone! Painful is right! Currently there is a set of K2 (one year only) nos clocks on Ebay  for $1,500! He's got them described as K1, but they're not. At this point, every 1/4 point is going to hurt! These old CBs sure get a lot of attention!

We feel for you, Keith. That's why I decided to make mine a "patina" bike that I just enjoy as a rider. It still looks pretty good but it would never stand up to the scrutiny of being judged in a show.

I wanted to go this year but the T-Storms were intense. During the first Godziila rally I came back from there in a deluge.

That is a beautiful bike Keith.

I hadn't noticed this before, but I was just reading that the earlier K2 bikes had a different "idiot light" handle bar clamp than later models. Early models had Flash-Oil-Neut-Beam, later ones had Turn-Oil-Neutral-Beam. There are a few other variations as well. I found this on CB750expert.com. Lots of good info. There.

I was gonna say...K2, and especially early K2, have to be one of the hardest to restore and judge...so many subtle parts changes.  Bet there are some experts on here that could find more than the AMCA judges!
If it works good, it looks good...

Agreed....I'm glad they weren't the judges! There was a question on my tank stripe, earlier stripes were painted on, mine is a decal. Yep, K2 is supposed to be a decal (whew)

Thanks Keith,
The bike really photographs well, but if you look at it in person you will see the patina of age. There are the usual nicks and scratches that come with a 45 year old bike. The tank has a couple of small dents in it as well. Somewhere along the line '73 forks were installed on it and the PO put a NOS '77 smooth caliper on.
I don't worry over those things, I just try to enjoy tinkering with it and riding it.
I will definitely make an effort to get to Rhinebeck for next years show.
