Anti Gravity Battery Problem
« on: July 08, 2017, 03:48:44 AM »
Hey, guys, I have an 8 Cell antigravity battery that I have had for a few years now (more than the warranty) and I am having a shorting problem on my bike.  After pulling my hair out for hours it turns out the short is actually on the battery, if I run continuity on the positive and negative sides I get zero resistance.

Is this a common issue, is the battery toast, what causes this?

This is a common method of frying your meter. Continuity or resistance tests should not be performed on an "energized" circuit. There are no continuity nor resistance tests to be performed across the terminals of a battery. The only test to be performed on a battery are voltage tests. Load tests can be performed but that is still just a measure of voltage under a load. What voltage readings are you getting at the battery (provided your meter still works)?

Here is a basic primer: http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/cal/PDF/MultimeterUse.pdf

Some meters will be damaged by trying thid but many are protected. A resistance measurement applies voltage across the leads and measures the voltage, doing an Ohm's law calculation to read resistance. It's still measuring voltage though, really... very low voltage but this circuitry usually  has overvoltage protection.
A "short circuit" is a specific fault. It's common to call any electrical problem a "short", often incorrectly.
So what are your symptoms?
What is the battery voltage - key OFF,  key ON but not running, idling, and above 3000 rpm? Best measured with a fully charged battery but useful info regardless.
If you can measure current at the battery with the same conditions that is very informative. If you disconnect the headlight, current should be safe for a 10A rated meter (common for cheaper digital meters) but DO NOT use electric start!
I am very leery of Li batteries in vehicles that were designed for Pb wet cells. Their charging characteristics are very different: the consequences of overcharge can be catastrophic, and full discharge will ruin them. Our bikes generally have less than excellent charging systems and no full discharge protection.

Very interesting, well it pretty much makes it impossible to find a short if I have continuity between ground and everything else even when the ignition is off.  The battery at the moment was reading 10 volts, which is low because there is a short, and I cannot find it because...the battery reads continuity.  I am not testing with the battery off the bike which makes things easier but it still seems strange to me.

the battery reads continuity.

There are no "continuity" tests for a battery, only voltage. Trying to test for continuity across a battery can fry meters that aren't protected.

Electrical troubleshooting often requires finding out what it's not. Disconnect the battery and start checking individual circuits. Here's an interactive wiring diagram for a CB750K1:

http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring750K1.html

Other CB Hondas are similar. You can turn individual circuits on and off to help trace the circuits.

The battery at the moment was reading 10 volts,
Disconnect the battery negative terminal, and measure the voltage.

I got it, I was able to find the short after removing the battery, battery does seem to be good after charging over night.  I think I just got a little confused is all.

Thanks
