'72 500 four clutch repair
« on: July 12, 2017, 07:26:45 PM »
After searching for clutch parts with no luck, decided to repair or fabricate new.
Had a broken clutch push rod.  Made my own from 3/16 cold rolled steel rod.  10 1/8" long.  Machined ends to match old rod (what'd we do before Dremel tools).  Make sure you turn clutch end (domed end) to same diameter as old rod so it will fit into clutch release plunger.  I didn't and had to start all over.
The clutch adjuster (cylinder with internal screw threads that fits into left side cover) had a piece broken which I repaired with JB Weld. No pressure on part, so I think repair will hold.
CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT:  I backed both ends of clutch cable completely to stops.  Turned  clutch adjuster on cover until could feel resistance.  Back it up until had 1/2" play in clutch lever.
   Everything works fine so far.
