Newbie-basket case or pass
« on: July 05, 2017, 07:21:17 PM »
Hello from NC. Considering buying a basket case that previous owner wanted to restore 20 years ago but never finished. 1978 CB750K 15k miles clean title. Frame has been painted and carbs cleaned long ago I suppose.. Says has all the parts and Vetter Windjammer Fairing. The whole bike is disassembled,  engine was taken out from frame not opened up.  Will need exhaust tires and battery for sure. Any insight worth a look or pass. Thanks.

It's a fair bit of work and money to start with that for a project. It all depends upon how much the Seller wants, how much time and money you want to put into it, and whether at the end of it, you'll be over the moon to keep it.

You will invest far more money into the project than you will recover selling the bike. The '78 is also fairly "undesirable" as a high retail bike, but good bikes. They simply don't command the money the earlier K bikes do.

And of course, a title for the bike is another consideration...

Welcome from Richmond. If its a project bike you seek, there are other better deals around. If you want an inexpensive, project thats a runner, those are around too. We can help you find a good value, good bike that's less involved (if thats your goal).

Project bikes make terrible first bikes.  It will be a very long time and lots of money before you get to ride...and how will you know if you have done well when you have nothing to compare it to.
If it works good, it looks good...

Tell him to wish in one hand and #$%* in the other and see which one fills up first. Even with a title, that's too much for a pile of parts. ;)

Haha...im glad I came here and asked for input as opposed to going into it blind. I have an VTX1800 I recently obtained and am tinkering with. But would like to eventually get CB to restore/own. Thanks again.

+1

Basket cases are parts bikes until reassembled. $250-$300 tops depending on condition.

I'd tell him to get bent! I paid 500 cash for my bike with title less than 15k and not a spot of rust on it. All she needed was a hg job. CB series are awesome bikes but 800 for a pile of parts of unknown condition on the word of a bearded pud tugged I would not trust.
