1970 CB750 Clutch basket assembly question.
« on: July 16, 2017, 04:54:29 PM »
I have a question about the clutch if anyone could give me advice or point me in the right direction.  The clutch basket and plates were out of the motorcycle when I bought it.  There were 2 other clutch baskets and two covers included and I'm not sure which one goes into the 1970 CB750.

I have 6 metal plates and bought 7 new clutch plates and springs for my 1970 CB750 K0. I'm installing the metal plates and there is a flat edge and a rounded edge. What direction are they installed? Does the flat edge point towards the engine? Does anyone have an exploded view of the clutch basket and the parts for the 1970 CB750.  My clymer's manual is vague about the differences in the clutch between then years.

Included in the basket of clutch plates I found a set with 7 clutch plates of the same size and a set with 6 clutches of the same size and one that is slightly smaller.

Thanks
aRnold

The important bit is to install the metal plates so that they all face the same direction. I install the sharp flat edge to face the inside of the engine (ie rounded side faces out).

Hondaman is very clear in his book that flat (sharp-edged) side goes towards the engine.

I can highly recommend his book, especially, if like me, this is your first attempt to do major engine work.

He also gives a lengthy explanation of clutch plate and differences in the early years - depends on engine number.

Good luck

Thanks guys.  I had bought this 1970 CB750 K0 2 weeks ago.  The previous placed the wrong pressure plate into the assembly.  It looks like it caused damage to the inside of the clutch cover which is seen in on elf the pictures.  I found the correct pressure plate in the box of parts that came with the motorcycle.  I put it all together.
Thanks again for the information

Check ALL clutch parts since you might have later parts not compatible with the correct ones you need for the K0.
Basket?
The alu center part with splines for the metal plates must be correct. The later one is longer and will cause damage if mixed in an old clutch
Fibers..I should buy NEW with fresh Barnett springs. Clutch plates from cruzinimage

Check the schematics.

What is correct length for the center part with splines?
