Fork seals -CB 550. First timer questions
« on: July 15, 2017, 05:47:05 PM »
My latest cb550 project came with some new fork seals in the package to install.  Lots of helpful online tips to make it a simple afternoon project.  Also took the time to polish them up with sand paper while disassembled.

Couple of Q's.  1977 model.

- the springs measure 18 3/4 inches long.  Same as a spare set I have laying around.  When I popped the caps off, some PO had three flat washers in there for spacers.  I assume this is a simple and quick trip just to stiffen them up?  No harm in putting them back this way?

- the oil was quite clean that came out and had a greenish tinge. I assume it wasn't ATF but perhaps true fork oil.  Do I dare pose a fork oil suggestion question?  I have ATF on hand and since that is what the manual says, it was what I was going to put in.

I hope you didn't sand the chrome  :o

Washers under the plugs are legit.  Stock 550 forks can be a little dive-y.
Atf is fine.  Bel-ray fork oil is green.  If you liked the way it handled - then reinstall the washers.

Heat and grease make removal and install easy.  As well as an impact drill with an allen head driver.

Great.  I can wrap this job up in the morning then.  Good chance to polish up some hard to reach chrome as well.  I did like the way it handled on my brief test ride.
