Sell it. He didn't pay you one red cent and like others have said 7 years with zero payment or any real correspondence and no contact information makes this easy. Plus I think you would have to file in the state the work was done in and you don't have an address to tie the lien to (that's where the power of a lien kicks in- when it is tied to real estate).

Don't bother with the lien, sell it because at this point he has no claim to ownership after the work and storage fees with interest you have tied into this mother.

7 years is a ridiculous amount of time. I'd sell it for sure.

You've made more than your fair share of attempts trying to contact him. Clearly he doesnt care about it.

Too bad I'm in Toronto, or else I'd buy it.

500 bucks Mark, and if he comes looking for it, send him to see me...... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

It's not titled. Sell it. You've been WAY too patient.

My thought too. 7 years and you are out of pocket real money. At this point interest and storage fees plus the cost of the work will likely exceed the value of the engine. Personally I wouldn't even bother with the attorney opinion (and expense) at this point. You are well within your rights to sell and recoup the money.

Even if you did zero work to it, it seems to me like you now are the rightful owner after all this time storing it with no contact. No one on here would call you a crook or cheat for getting your time and money out of it. This site and you are easy to find.

I would imagine each state has it's own laws regarding this but years ago I agreed to replace the engine in a Ford Crown Vic, it initially just needed an engine but when they towed it over to me they didn't realize you're supposed to pull the driveshaft out of that particular Ford trans and by the time it got here the trans was literally smoking so now it needed another trans as well and that was a cost the owner wasn't expecting. I found a source for another engine with matching trans but the owner would never return my calls so the car sat here for over a year, I got fed up and went to my local police station to ask what my rights were and was basically told that being the car was setting on my property and being the owner of the car wouldn't respond then I could do pretty much whatever I wanted so I called the local salvage yard (the same that had the needed engine and trans) told them the situation and they hauled it away allowing me to wash my hands of it. The salvage yard then went through the procedures to obtain a title for it which in some way or another the actual owner was contacted who then had the option to give the car up or pay storage fees. Being the owner balked at the cost of replacing the engine and trans in the first place and was now facing even more cost due to storage, the owner gave it up to the salvage yard.

In your case Mark I agree that you've been way too patient and have already gone above and beyond in your attempts to contact the owner of the engine to settle this.

Sell it. It'll cost him more to take legal action against you than the motor is worth.
The guy is a douche bag IMO, and probably does business the same way with others.
You have bent over backwards for him. He's had his chance to do the right thing.
And it'd be very foolish for him to come on here whining about it. You have right on
your side :)

Wow! There's some good ideas, here!
Terry: I have an engine I'd sell for $500, but this ain't it... ;)
This one if fully rebuilt and about to be run-tested, as soon as I get space to set it up. There's 2 others ahead of it for that 'last step' I do with them. I already have my 'spare' K1 engine for my own bike, so I sure don't need another around here. I have 9 of them, and a 550 bottom end for someone in Canada, who lost his apartment after someone broke in and threatened his family, so he's gotta find them a safe place to live, before he starts rebuilding his bike(!). :o
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Don't sell it! Raffle it, how many members here would be willing to pay say $25 for a crack at a Honda Man motor? You might end up with a tidy profit beyond what any single buyer would pay.
They could even pull the winner at the Family reunion..........if anyone is sober enough to pick a name out of a hat!

Jesus, absolutely yes. Storage fees alone would have eaten up the original value, even if very nominal.

Just put a disclaimer on the raffle that if you don't sell at least 125 tickets you'll refund the ticket price and sell elsewhere.

you have one problem
you let  let the time go,,as he did..
so think you both  led time go..make both of you have some part of the problem
...so to sell the engine..vitaut to give him a last thance to akt..is a problem..think a advocate vill vaight that heiger..then he not have payed anything yet.he had also not get anything from you..

oftem motorcycel procjekts go over long time so presedens to hold a time limit..is not so normal in this branche..as in a car shop..or bicycel builder
but ve in Europa is often different thinking.

It's going to be hard to give the guy a chance when he's disappeared and left no forwarding address, email or phone number. He lost that engine fair and square.
