(who'd pay $2500 for an engine in "unknown" condition)

The condition isn't unknown. It is fully rebuilt and improved by an acknowledged expert on SOHC4 engines. If you bought a 'rebuilt' engine from me then the condition is unknown, or at least suspect since I am not a professional. Mark is.

Once again, you assume that outside of this forum, Mark is well known as an acknowledged expert. As much as we all admire him, he doesn't quite have the same status as RC, or APE etc.

If Mark tries to sell his engine outside of this forum (and no-one has offered to pay him the $2500(+) asking price here, as yet) where Mark is not as well known, his engine wouldn't be that highly sought after.

I think that it's important to always remember that this is just the Internet, and there's a real world outside...... ;D

Terry wrong thread! You're just pissed off because he wouldn't sell it to you for $500.........there is a pissed off thread to air out your frustrations! ;D

Yes, what was I thinking, I picked up a copy of Mark's book at my local Hondaman big box store on the way home from my job as a porn star, and read the first two chapters when I was stuck in space traffic, from the saddle of "Hillary", my faithful, magical Unicorn........ ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

But high on verbal flatulence, does that make up for the lack of offers?

True.

Not true! This engine is sold...and my engines do not fail the rider. Ever, so long as they change the oil and don't try to dragrace it (I gave up making those engines, leave that to APE and the like.)
:)

I was building these engines LONG before SOHC4.net was a gleam in it's daddy's eye! The moniker "Hondaman" actually came from a large group of people in the US Midwest, over a 4-State area, who brought me their CB750s for me to work on when I had my shop. Someone came up with the name then, and it has haunted me my whole life.

Not that it's a BAD thing...  ;)

It's going to be hard to give the guy a chance when he's disappeared and left no forwarding address, email or phone number. He lost that engine fair and square.

That's kind of where I have ended up: I've been trying to contact him since last April (2016) when I somehow received a lone e-mail response from him, telling me he was back in the States and was moving to Florida again (no other info, like an address, city, etc.?). As far as I can tell, he never got there? Before that, it was several years since his previous last reply, which was, basically, "I'll get back to you on that..." (never did).

you have one problem
you let  let the time go,,as he did..
so think you both  led time go..make both of you have some part of the problem
...so to sell the engine..vitaut to give him a last thance to akt..is a problem..think a advocate vill vaight that heiger..then he not have payed anything yet.he had also not get anything from you..

oftem motorcycel procjekts go over long time so presedens to hold a time limit..is not so normal in this branche..as in a car shop..or bicycel builder
but ve in Europa is often different thinking.

I'm used to these projects taking a year or two: I have some three years in their 'making', but they are active, with the owners contacting me, paying for their parts, etc. This guy just vanished like smoke, left no forwarding address, phone doesn't work, e-mails don't ever come back, etc. I don't know what else to do with it, and it's a fully-rebuilt K1 engine in fine shape: not a rare thing! I also have K2/K3(2 of these)/K4/K5 and even an early K0 diecast engine in various states of rebuild (my projects) that will one day end up in a bike, maybe mine, maybe not.

I'm not sure: I'll ask him?
But, fully half or more of the engines I do are from people who never heard of this forum. I end up steering them this way, as they are often resto-ing and looking for assistance. Once in a while it's a cafe' owner who heard of my website from someone else, then clicked the link about rebuilding an engine to contact me. That's how this one started, too. The last 750 this winter and the 550 after it came from someone ordering the Gas Cap Pins on my website, only to be told they can get them by donating here (I "sell" them by having someone donate here, then send the pin kits, so we can generate some direct, non-ad revenue: I don't make anything on those). After that, they came back and clicked on the 'rebuild' link to start talking about their engines: that's how they start out most of the time when off-line from here.

Mark, increase the value of the engine, fasten a plaque with engraved text on the upper case. "Rebuilt and restored by Mark Paris aka Hondaman" or something similar.

You're not the first one to recommend that(!). I don't think I am quite that important?

Maybe give his name and other pertinent info privately to a couple of really good internet sleuths we have here and let them do their thing like searching social media and other venues to see if they can locate him for you so you can give him a final deadline or notify him of your intentions. I have seen some excellent undercover work from guys here in the past  ;)  Any internet guru volunteers ?

No, it's not the original owner. I don't think he was a member here, either. The one who wants the motor is a member, though.
:)

I am about to take the cam bearings off it again, because it was rebuilt back when we were getting those too-thin rubber head pucks in the Vesrah kits, so I am afraid this might be one of those. If so, it WILL leak, about 1500-2000 miles from now. While I am there, I am going to see if it also has the dreaded [recalled] non-Honda cam chain tensioner kit: my notes only show that I replaced the tensioner parts. At that time, or about that time, Honda had stopped selling their tensioners and PartsNmore and CB750Supply (among others) were selling the copycat ones like PeWe had that came apart. You can tell which one it is by looking for a certain little mark, cast onto the upper rubber tension roller, so if it has the so-called 'bad' one, I'm gonna change that, too, before sending it off.

I'm picky about stuff like that....

Reasonably so, it's one thing if it was sold at the time, but to sell that now would be less than one would expect from a Hondaman rebuild. Sucks that you have to put even more work into it (not to mention the fact that you probably lost a good chunk of your labour on the sale), but it must be done. I specifically ordered OEM from CMSNL for my rebuild for that very reason.

True.

(and no-one has offered to pay him the $2500(+) asking price here, as yet) where Mark is not as well known, his engine wouldn't be that highly sought after.

Not that it's a BAD thing...  ;)

Well done Mark, so you've sold it to a member here for your asking price of $2500(+)? Who is the lucky member? I'm sure he's not requesting anonymity? Anyway, good for you, as per your original post you need the money while you're looking for a job, so this sale should keep you going for awhile. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Mark, was he a member here?
Yes! He is a member here.

You said it's sold...and he's a member here? Do you mean the original guy or did you find a new buyer?
Really just curious if you were able to track down Mr. M.I.A.

I specifically ordered OEM from CMSNL for my rebuild for that very reason.

Sadly, when we had the problem with the leaky head pucks, Honda did not sell them, but even Yamiya had the wrong ones(!). I had gasket kits from Vesrah, NE Brand, and one off-brand I'd not heard of before, and all 3 had too-thin pucks in them. I think they must have fit some other more recent bike, too, looking much the same, but thinner. For a while, we were using simple O-rings in some of the bikes instead of pucks, and they worked fine, too. Today, Honda's own head gaskets more closely resemble the ones from NE Brand.

I'll leave that decision up to him: I do that with all my 'clients'. ;)
