1990 Ducati 750 Sport build

So I have a buddy who had this parked in his garage for 15 years with only 8600 miles on the odometer. Picked it up today for a deal I couldn't pass up. Needs a good cleaning and rubber parts replaced but it's almost all there. Deleted airbox with dual 38 Mikuni carbs as well.  Plan is to let the build evolve as it goes but keep a bit of the 90's retro vibe in the process.

My old friend brandEn (yes, he is still around) wanted to see a build thread so here it is.

First order of business was to get it running.  Remote fuel tank since the fuel pump was shot and bit of oil in the spark plug hoes, a couple of hand turn overs then hit the button and she fired.  Sounded so sweet!

Started cleaning and it turned into this after a couple hours...



Soda blasted the engine and freshened it up a bit.  Stainless hardware coming soon.

17 inch wheels, inverted fork and rear shock from a 900ss to increase handling and overall performance in the works.

I like the 90's Ducatis.  I had a 96 900 SS and it was a good bike.  Think about new cam belts, they been sitting around for awhile.  Maybe be ok if you do not rev it much, but why risk it.  It looks great!!

Stainless hardware for the engine, carbs sent out for vapor blast and rebuild.  The 900ss fore and front wheel should be here tomorrow for mock up.  Once I get the mock up completed I can tear it down and send off parts for powder and I can start the search for a good local painter.

I agree Don.  I just hope as it evolves it matches the vision I have in my head.  Parts are not as readily available as old Hondas which makes this build fun and a pain in the ass.  One thing I do know is that the frame is staying Ducati red, I had thoughts of changing it but keep coming back to red. I am thinking red frame, black body work and Brembo gold wheels or possibly red wheels.

Well, at least it is not an old CA77/78...those things will drive you to the nut house because of misidentified parts that do not fit.  Ask ToyTuff about his if you want to hear a rant on it.  It was his first and last...

Started the mock up of the bike.  keeping the front faring as is, including the square headlight.  Slight modification to the tail and might remove the rear  passenger pegs / exhaust hangers for a more modern approach with aluminum hangers.



Steering stem swapped on the 900ss front forks, this was easier than I expected using a little heat and my press.



Rebuilt the new to me 900ss rear shock and have been cleaning all the other 17 inch swap parts.



Carbs have been ultrasonic cleaned and in the process of rebuild.


Once the mock up is completed I will tear everything down and send the parts out to my powdercoater.  This weekend I hope to get the new belts installed on the engine, new clutch and do a valve adjust to button up the engine.

Ya know, Tige..without shouting to the world about it, I recently got access to a shop here, and I just finished a touch-up on a Wes Cooley replica GS1000S yesterday..and I'm going to fix a fairing for a CX650 Turbo for a friend of mine soon.  I might be in the market for some side work, but because I can only work on Saturdays there, it would have to be for people who are patient and not squeamish about material costs.  You, Branden, and Chris are people that certainly tick the right boxes, for sure.  Gimme a call sometime and we can talk about the possibility.  Your Duc would be a fun project.

Wow! I would have strongly suspected Ducati using Marzocchi.  That's cool.  Showa is so easily serviceable, too.
