front end noise - Bearings? Tach? 1975 CB550
« on: July 30, 2017, 11:01:50 AM »
I have a 1975 cb550 which has been kept up well.  The bike has about 9000 miles on it.  I noticed that my front end has been giving a noise similar to an old roller skate wheel.  I have also noticed my tachometer has been bouncing around.  I jacked up the front end and could really find no play in the front wheel and no noise when hand spinning.  The front brake is making a slight squeak but it has done that for a while.  I have already taken apart the brake and rebuilt it which temporarily fixed the squeak but it's back.  Anyway, my concern is the front end locking up if it is a bearing issue.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Kevin

try to lube the bronze bearing up in the taco/spedo..mine cb 550 and my cbx did the same..and i just lubed the problem aut of this vorld

think i need to split the unit to get it real kleaned and lubed korekt..but some wd 40 did the job ..and i afterlubed vith some thikker oil..the 40 vas just to open up for the real oil..

the spedo can make a real heigh noising..dont think you have a bearing problem..but its a low cost job to thange them..

Tach bouncing...could be the tach cable is getting ready to break.

disconnect the tach and/or speedo at the drive end and see if the noise goes away. I had needles bouncing all over the place when I first restored my 750. Put on new cables and the bouncing pretty much went away.
