1974 Honda cb550
« on: July 24, 2017, 06:50:57 AM »
Hello guys, I haven't posted much, been more just reading but run into a dead end. So I have a 1974 honda cb550E and it starts and rides perfect but only first 7-10 miles, then shuts off and won't start until it cools a bit. Checked all the fuses everything is good and by the way I rewired entire bike from nothing following scametics and everything works fine. Anyone have any 8dea why it looses spark when it gets hot??? New condensors and points are clean.

is it sputtering to a stop, dying when you come to a stop, or losing electrical power?

Based on your description it sounds electrical. I know you have checked things over, but it sounds like something is overheating. Coils perhaps.

Take it for a ride and bring a spare spark plug and insulated pliers with you. When (if) it dies, one by one pull the plug wires, put in the spare, touch it to the head and look for spark. If you see a good fat spark you know that ignition isn't the issue and you can start looking for fuel problems.

Start with basic essentials.
Fuel level in tank?
Fuel selector on?
Switch to reserve?
Gas cap vent clear?
Battery voltage level?
Lights on or off?
Fuses intact? Fuse clips grab main fuse fiercely?
