#1 Not firing just right?
« on: January 21, 2007, 10:39:57 PM »
I just finished the install of my dyna ignition, coils, wires, and a new round oil tank.Everything went generally smooth.I also made up an electrical box similar to the santee box;"the wiring was the #$%*".This issue I`m having seems to be present from before the install of these parts too.The #1 plug when I took it out was wet with fuel.1st thing I did was check to see if I`m getting fire to that plug.It is getting plenty of spark. The motor runs kinda flat.It does raise the RPM if I spray starting fluid in that carb while it`s running.I also checked to see if the motor would run if I disconnected that plug wire.It runs like I didn`t do anything,I disconnect the #4 wire and it cuts right off.
I just tried to give you guys as much info as I could come up with to help me diagnose the issue. What should I do first to diagnose the problem? Thanks for any help offered.

Problem both before and after?
Is it a new plug?  Is it carbon fouled so that the spark travels down the electrode insulator instead of jumping the gap?  Does the problem follow the plug when moved to another cylinder?

Lets try dubug this by substitution:-

1) Comfim its no 1 and no other cyls are misfiring as well
Feel the exausts after 10 seconds on running from cold, be quick though the heat bleads through to the outer pipe quick. What your looking for is no 1 should be cold/colder than the rest.If its cold a new plug is a good idea.  Repeat the same proceedure. Still cold the fire easy start up the carb or remove the plug and put in 10 drops of fuel. Try again.  If the engine now fires it points to fuel problem.

2) Check fuel to carbs ( I trust its not over 6 months old, it goes off bad now ).
Pull off petrol pipes from the tap, switch on tap does fuel flow? if not clean tap bowel out , if the petrol does flow ok and your bike fails on 1 after some miles the filller vent could be blocked ( ride with cap open to check this one out).
With fuel flowing to the carbs flip the float bowel off is it as full as the other carbs, no well sort that out, could be stuck needle valve or blocked passage way in carb.

3) Still no luck? Now it gets tricky, you see the spark could be there but too weak. Or its a mechanical problem. I trust valve clearances are O.K (mabye check the on cyl 1).

4) So it could be condensor or coils (most likley coils) you can check this out by swapping the condensors over/fitting another one.

5) Still no joy O.K now swap the yellow and blue connectors over that go to the coils and swap over the positions of coresponding the h.t leads.  In other words swap 1 coil into the another coils position ( you may need to remove the coil set from the frame but make a good wire connection from the coil alloy bracket to the frame. Now the fault should move to another cylinder.  However if your coils are 5 to 10 years old they will be one there way out anyway in my experiance so get a new set from David Silver Spares at £55. And save some time.

6) But before you spend the £55 pos do a compression check if you suspect over revvinging or the engines been standing for some time.

I checked compression today;it`s good.It has new wires, coils, and plugs. It is getting fire to the plug also.I have a spare carb body,I`m gonna try to change that out this week and see what that does. What`s the chances that the timing is out far enough that that plug isn`t firing at the correct time?I just reinstalled the new Dyna plate in the same position as the points plate I took out.Any thoughts?

Not to beat a dead horse.  But, I 've seen new plugs carbon up in a few minutes.  It was carb problem induced, for sure.  But, the new plug didn't work again until the carbon was removed.

Pretty small if its coil mate cylinder is firing.
