Farthest you've had to push your bike
« on: July 27, 2017, 08:46:34 PM »
Hopefully the answer here is 0 - never happened, but I know some of you more seasoned veterans have had the unthinkable happen while on the road.

Surely you have Frank - you take that 750 all over the place.

I myself have generally lucked out.  Even on some of my longer rides I've managed to keep it functional (barely) enough to make it into town.  So far, the farthest I've had to push the bike is 1 mile - on a busy 2 lane road with NO shoulder and the road full of total a-hole drivers in suburban assault vehicles.  It was a wonder I managed to keep it from falling into the grassy ditch by the side of the road.

But the subject came to mind while I was on my last trip to the Tetons.  There are stretches of highways there around the Montana/Idaho border where there isn't anything and really isn't anyone either.  I barely made it to the first gas station on I-15, but had I guessed wrong it could have been me pushing that bike 20 miles in 95 deg weather.  All I can say is thank God for the fuel gauge on my BMW.  Miss a gas station and you're screwed.

I don't recall pushing my bikes but when I blew the Kaeasaki motor a couple years back, I walked home 3 miles to get my truck and go retrieve it.
The wife wasn't home and I didn't feel like troubling any of my buddies.

Twice. First time an xj650 about a mile or so from home but was nearly all uphill .
Second time my rd after a piston fell apart. Only about a quarter of a mile from home and flat but I only had 350km on a new rebuild .
It nearly broke my heart.

I think 3/4 mile at least twice.
Another time about 1 mile from next town... but 10 miles from home, had ridden 280 miles already, and had pushed it 3/4 mile and fixed a flat earlier  in the heat. SO I called a buddy with a truck.
When I blew my 836 up, I was about 6 miles or so from town up a pass,  pushed about 1/2 mile then coasted a mile or two, then another 1/4 to next hill.  That got me about a mile from the gas station I was meeting my ride at, so I fired it up and rode, it was pounding and smoking.

'Bout a mile, but it was Tempe, AZ so it was flat, and it was a CB160 so it was light. Bad battery, went for too long of a ride at night with the lights on and it took a dump.
Pushed a 350F about a half mile, same conditions. Blown fuse.

** I should add: had to push my '64 Plymouth about 2/3 mile, by myself. It was flat and I ran out of gas (don't ask). Had to stop for a break, and about 50 feet from the gas station someone ran over and helped me get it in. I appreciated it, but I would have appreciated it more about a half mile away.

2.5 miles. My ignition coils crapped out and I was too proud to ask for help. (Honestly, I thought I was closer to home. As I was halfway I was about done but thought screw it, I made it this far)

About 3/4 of a mile with a cb550 I had on an ever so slight uphill grade, it was one of those moments where I wished I had never smoked a cigarette.

Maybe 2 miles pushing the bike to get gas. I figured it was a good workout.  :P

3 miles...but it was worth it. I found my ruby red KO covered and in the garage. I was afraid the guy would sell it before I got back so I gave him a downpayment and pushed it to my mother-in-laws house. It was a warm and humid July day and I was 55 at the time and in good shape. I must have looked pretty pitiful as guys stopped and offered to help. I think they thought I ran out of gas. Yes, it was worth not taking a risk on loosing this bike.

A little over 3 miles, but mostly uphill on a fairly hot day. I was certainly fitter then at 18. I repaired the CB72 and then sold it. Mistake.

I did - on my Tiger 1050 when the cooling system self-destructed.  Since the commute is carpool lane all the way - the only place to pull that overheated monster was left side of the road in rush hour traffic.

Thank God for tow trucks - they don't care who they piss off, they just get the job done.  There were a LOT of angry commuters too.

I've pushed when out of gas - coupla miles when I was younger - 2 or 3 times. I've pushed when the bike just died, more recently, about 3 miles, but it was a 360 and not that difficult. At least it was along the beach. I've pushed twice having gone out for a test ride around town and not having reset the clutch properly - that wasn't far though and again, the 360. It's good exercise:)

I have been lucky enough not to have gotten stuck in the middle of a multi-lane freeway . . . yet. I did crash a bike on one tho, back in '86 (I think). Got real lucky there.

Pushed my 550 about 3/4 of a mile.  Slight uphill.  I learned that day to NEVER POWER WASH YOUR BIKE AT A CARWASH!!  DOH!

She apparently dried out while on our little stroll as I was able to kick 'er back to life just before the hill was guna get really steep!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

About 2 miles.  But it was a CB125.  I outweighed the bike. It had run out of gas.  Up hills was not fun. Down hills was.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Not on a motorcycle but I broke down on a moped I made a few years back. I had to peddle it about 7 miles home. Lugging the extra weight of the motor sucked.

2.7 miles.   I though for sure somebody would see me and stop.  Didn't realize it was that far until I got back in the truck to retrace my steps.  CB750 not the most fun bike to push.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.
