DIY Arduino carb sync project for electronic geeks
« on: June 23, 2017, 05:05:57 AM »
My oldest son is an IT manager for the company he works for so in his spare time he plays around with computers a lot and he handed me this gadget for Father's Day, it's an Arduino computer set up and programmed to be a carb sync gauge. I can't say how absolutely accurate it is but I did hook up my Morgan carbtune sync gauge up to my 83 Goldwing which showed my GL carbs were close but not exactly spot on then hooked up the Arduino to see how it compared to what the carbtune was saying and the Arduino was saying the same thing, close but not spot on. My son gave a quick guess at how much it would cost to build this from scratch and he figured the cost of the Arduino itself combined with the vacuum sensors, circuit board for the sensors and digital display comes in at around $140 and I still need to make up a case for it so I wouldn't say it's cost effective considering my Morgan carbtune cost less so I imagine the first question a non computer geek person would ask is why bother? Well my kid built it because he could and cost effective or not I still think it's cool and I'm proud of my son for taking his computer knowledge and using it in a motorcycle related way.

For any of you electronic geeks here that are interested in it and have questions, feel free to ask ...... just keep in mind it's my kid that's the comp geek not me so I'd have to relay any questions to him and wait for an answer.

Very cool. I would be interested in a parts list and maybe the code if he would like to share?

I'm working on building exhaust gas analyzers for even finer tuning. I've been kicking around the idea of using an Arduino for data logging with it:

Very cool. Would also be interested in parts/code if he wants to make it available.

My kid used to be a member here when he had his 73 750 but he hasn't logged on here in a long time so I'm going to see if i can talk him into logging back on to at least answer any questions directly. He himself didn't write the code but as far as I know it's free for anyone who wants it and here's some links to give you an idea http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Throttle-Body-Syncronization-Shield/ and this one https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MPXV5050VC6T1/MPXV5050VC6T1CT-ND/951857 He did however have issues with the code, if I understood him correctly it had to do with getting the Arduino to talk to the vacuum circuit board. He also said that there is another way of building it where you don't need the vacuum circuit board which lowers the cost but I'll see if I can get him to log on and explain it and to explain what he had to do to resolve the code issue.

Hey that's really clever!

If it can be refined to be as (or more) accurate than the carbtune he'd have a next level tool there!

Hey Everyone! I'm Bailgang's Son!  Might be obvious from my username haha.  If you guys have any quests let me know.  The original plan was from another http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?73158-Built-a-digital-carb-sync

He used GM 1bar map sensors I believe.  Then I found another one already linked here on instructables.  I used the Code from the venturerider.org post and the sensors and board form the instructables post to make it SUPER compact.  I used a knock off arduino uno.  It will run on a NANO but is way too slow.  and Adriuno Mega will work just fine as well, I just wanted to keep that one for other projects.  I have a 16*2 LCD screen and had to do some configuring there. The address of the screen was different from the one in venture rider but was able to figure it out.

Would you be able to use one of these Arduino boards as an add-on to a Raspberry Pi to run as the computer?
