Honda CB400 - 460cc Harrier/Dixon Racing Value?
« on: April 11, 2017, 01:42:29 PM »
Hi There,

I have just been asked to value a rather rare 1978 Honda CB400.

It is a Dixon racing/Harrier i believe, it has 460cc big bore, cams, suspension, exhaust and other bits, its only done 2600 miles from new and is a 1 owner bike, it has the Dixon racing stamp in the service book as the new keeper or the main dealer i believe.

The bike is in almost mint condition, has been dry stored and looks amazing, it also has a "rickman" style half fairing with the bike.

What is this bike realistically worth as they are really rare and I cannot find much information on them at all, and nothing as far as a valuation.

Yours - Joe

Thank you for your reply, Unfortunately i don't have a picture of the bike as of yet, i was just curious if the extras and low mileage make it more valuable than a standard bike, i have been asked to try and find a value for this motorbike from a friend of an elderly gentleman who is now in his 80's.

Thanks - Joe

Will be interesting to see a picture. It could be one of two things- either a Mocheck Harrier (see link below),  these were from Mocheck in Clapham, were always in white with CMA wheels, Piper exhaust, Yoshi 460 kit and cam, cafe style seat, Koni shocks and a bikini fairing.  Alternatively, Dixon Racing were the Yoshimura main agents and sold everything for CB400Fs, piston kits, cams, exhausts etc etc. and maybe built this bike up.

Very difficult to value- depends on what spec it is, also how much recommissioning it takes to get it back on the road- things like rings for those Yoshi pistons are not easily available if at all now. 400f's aren't selling all that well either, stock bikes tend to get highest prices but even immaculate ones  seem to be only making £3k-£4k. Whereabouts in the UK are you?

At worst its the sum of the used parts or goodies.
But if its a well built attractive bike with top notch components, it goes way up.
Things like Ceriani fork vs stock, Rare mag wheels vs stock, AP caliper and rotor vs rear drum , exhaust, full braided lines, attractive paint in good nick vs gelcoat, good rear shocks vs stock, CR carbs vs stock.
Custom frame and or swingarm... It goes on and on, and drives up the price and desirability.

race history? verifiable? successful? with log book?...without some or all of these most collectors may only consider it comparable to a slightly interesting period custom
If it works good, it looks good...

I have a book, titled "The Encyclopedia of Motorcycles", copyrighted 2001, which has a short blurb about Dixon:
"Dixon-Honda
England 1972- unknown
This company were manufactures of "go faster" frames. They fitted these frames around Yoshimura-tuned twins and fours from Honda."
Interestingly, there is also a mention of the Dixon name on the Seeley page of the same book:
"The mid-to late 1970s were spent in cooperation with Honda, and these years of partnership yielded the 1975 big-bore (820cc) Dixon-Seeley single overhead-cam Honda four roadster and the 1978 Seeley-Honda Superbike."
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
