Splitting Cases - Disassembly - CB550
« on: July 28, 2017, 09:25:36 AM »
Looking for tips on splitting my bottom cases and pulling the transmission.

Do I do this with the engine upside down? If so, do I remove the bolts on top then flip it?
Anything special to look out for?

Thanks in advance for any guidance - this is my first go at anything like this.

For just transmission work you can leave the head untouched.
Remove the side covers. The clutch should probably come off, if you need to work on the primary shaft it will be rather inconvenient if attached. It will be less fun to get off once the cases are split, with a gear engaged you can undo the special nut fairly easily.
Remove the oil pump and all the shifter bits etc that cross the cases. Take pictures or video of this, it is confusing getting the parts back on in the correct order. The sprocket bolts are much easier to remove before disassembly too.
I'm not sure if any case bolts go through the top side. If there are, take them out first then flip the engine. Block it up so the split is reasonable level and the engine is secure... not rocking around. Then remove all the bolts, keep track of where they go: I punch them through a piece of cardboard in the rough hole pattern.
There are a few pry points around the case to crack the sealant open. Do not pry between the cases if avoidable, that damages the sealing surface.
Watch out for the starter clutch on the primary shaft: its rollers, springs, and caps will probably fly out when it comes apart.

Yeah, what's the reason for splitting the cases? If it's to replace the primary chain the top end has to come off as well. If it's to replace or repair tranny parts or kickstart parts then top end can stay in place. If it's to replace primary shaft parts, that can be done with the motor together and even in the frame still.

I'm taking it down completely (top end is already off) to have the cases blasted and powder coated. So, it all has to come apart. Plus, I'm using this as a learning experience - I have time and patience, so I want to do the whole bike from the ground up.

The manual has the procedure I think. You normally want to do the smaller bolts first so they don't snap or strip when you remove the larger bolts. Cross pattern loosen a little at a time.

If I remember correctly there is a hidden case bolt UNDER the oil pump.
Once all the bolts are out use a medium size dead blow hammer and with
the engine inverted hit upward on the lower engine mount boss, this will split
the seal bond then once loose the lower case lifts off.
  Have fun

Yes, there's a hidden bolt but not really under the oil pump on the 550 but under the oil pan. Only thing really to look out for is removing the larger crank bolts in a criss cross pattern. And take pictures!!! No, more than that! I reference my old pictures ALL the time.
