'77 550F Engine tear down and rebuild question
« on: August 05, 2017, 05:57:55 PM »
Hey everyone. I figured I'd come here, take a break and ask a question. I'm at the point on my rebuild where I have cleaned surfaces, installed new valves and valve guides, and new piston rings. I have successfully got all four cylinders into the buckets, but my question is this....how come I am having trouble getting the cylinder head to go all the way down? I don't want to force anything and risk damage. I feel like I've done everything correct so far. Any insight would be great, thank you.

Edit: it's about an inch maybe inch and an eighth away from mating to the crankcase.
God I hope I have all these component names right for the engine.

If I've learned anything about building a motorcycle, it's check and re-check your work before you put it all back together. Although you do gain more experience by doing it twice.

Probably your cam chain tensioner is not installed properly.

When you installed new guides, did you have the seats recut? If not, best to do it now before you assemble the head to the motor.

Yes seats were recut, I'll check out if it could be the cam chain tensioner. I'll take a picture and up load in a few min.

calj, I am a total idiot. It was something as simple as just rocking the head a little and giving it some loving to get seated. I apologize for not doing this initially and taking up space on the forum. I will post when I have an issue worthy to ask.

That's funny! No I just feel like such a noob on this stuff, and I mean I guess I am. Next time I'll work out my issues instead of crying wolf ya know, but yes onward! and I'm gonna substitute 6 beers in place of the soichiros, so all in all i think it pretty much pans out.  ;D

Always better to ask and discover a very simple solution than to forge ahead without confidence and tear something up.

Heh! well I'm about to waste even more of my time. I hit another snafoo and one that I can't figure out for the life of me. I was tightening the engine nuts to the engine studs, and had all of them right at 15lbs foot torque and I go do the last one and snap, and that little bastard broke, which sucks but that's not my biggest issue. Currently, I am trying to take off the cylinder head so I can address this situation but I am having a heck of a time trying to get the cam chain guide out. It has play but it won't go above those slots so I can turn it and remove it. I'm gonna ask for help on this on because I need to walk away for a bit and not be in the same room as that motor. I just don't understand why it went in there nicely and the correct way but now it's being a pain in the butt.
