Gears grind when shifting between neutral 1st and second
« on: August 04, 2017, 10:42:18 PM »
Recently revived cb750f

If I am revving the bike at all while shifting between neutral first or second there is a pretty hideous gear grinding and it won't shift into gear.  If I don't rev the bike at all the bike shifts fine.  Any ideas as to why  would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.  I have a manual and I'm struggling through the process. I love how cut and dry it sounds in the manual and how much I'm struggling with the adjustment lol.

Sat for about 20+ years.  New oil and filter 10w-40. I just made the adjustment for the clutch and maybe a little better but by no means totally fixed.

Did you use 4 stroke motorcycle oil?  Motorcycle oil is formulated for wet clutches.
If it sat for 20 years the clutch plates probably stuck and may still be sticky.
It may require a bit more usage for them to completely free up.
If the issue persists you may have to pull the clutch and inspect the plates.

If you didn't use oil formulated for 4 stroke motorcycles go ahead and change it.
You're going to want to change the oil again fairly soon anyway as all the sludge that developed while bike was sitting will be circulating though the motor and will quickly accumulate in and clog the filter.
It's also not a bad idea to remove the oil pan and check the screen at the oil pump.

Shift quicker, too. Don't try to "slip" these bikes into gear: they just get confused...just pop into gear, whichever one you use  :)
