Spark Advance Dowel Pin Size
« on: June 26, 2017, 09:19:20 PM »
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 72' cb500 engine. Well things were going just swell until I went to put the spark advance cam back on and realized the dowel pin was missing.

Would anyone happen to know the size of that pin? I can't seem to find it in any of the resources that I have used in the past, hopeful that the knowledgeable folks here might have an answer or be able to point me in the right direction.

I didn't think it came out of the end of the crank so it didn't even dawn on me to take care of not losing it. Now I know better.

Thanks!
Kenny

Measure the recess it fits into on the end of the crank.
I'm thinking its about 3mm

Nope wasn't fixed in the advancer plate. I had taken all of the engine pieces over to my dad's to de-greese I'm figuring it dropped out of the crank during that time, Will be sifting through the gunk tonight but my hopes are not high.

I can measure it but would need to use a scale as I don't have a caliper that is that small. I suppose a trip to the hardware store to stock up on a bunch of different sizes would work as well.

I feel its a high tolerance piece to keep the timing from moving around so thought I would ask this group if they knew the specific size.

Have been in the shadows reading posts and this was the first thing I wasn't able to find so I took the plunge into the forum, even if it is kinda a simple thing.

Thanks !

McGuiver it!
Push a piece of gum, playdough, putty, etc... in the crank or advancer hole, and then measure it.  ;D

Ok so in the end I made a new one from a steel pin that was a little bigger and spent some time with some sand paper to make it fit. 3mm is to small 4mm to big.

Interestingly the hole in the end of the Crank is just a bit bigger than the one in the advancer.

Everything is back together and running we'll see for how long this time !
