CB500k Fork boots question
« on: August 10, 2017, 07:43:30 PM »
Hey guys, the fork boots on my CB500K1 resto project have dust caps on the top.  Is this kosher or have they been bodged up by the PO? I need just the boots, not the dust caps.

The dust caps go on the bottom. Then the boot (gaiter) goes on over the dust cap.

Hmm, according to CMSNL dust caps aren't used at all.

Pretty sure they either had boots or caps.  Not both

That's actually a pretty neat solution for aftermarket headlight clamp use if you don't have the original fork ears as they are getting quite difficult to find now days!

Fortunately John I now have a set of fork ears.  8)  Closer inspection reveals that the caps were attached to the gaiters with rubber glue.  It'll be straightforward to detach them.

Gaiters, no caps. The caps were found on 750s.

Before you install the gaiters, look to see if they have small weep holes. If so, orient the hole to the "lower side" of the pleat for drainage. And I prefer to align the seam to the rear like a lady's stocking  ;)

Thanks for the tip Cal, that's exactly what I've done!  ;)

The late 550 used the fork dust caps without using gaiters with their fork ears.

Sometimes the fork tubes beneath the fork ears would rust...unrelated to gaiters...
