Oil presure or oil temperature
« on: August 13, 2017, 04:40:09 PM »
So getting ready to stick a oil presure gauge on my bike and started to think that oil temp might be more useful on the air cooled engine.  Any thoughts on what you would rather have?  I still have the oil light and the bike will be doing some intense mountain passes.

:)   you have asked a very good question ,   i think oil pressure would trump oil temp .   but it would be nice to know temp too .  am wondering what the normal operating temp should be ?

Biggest problem with remote gauges is the ability to see them while riding.  Once you know what "normal" temp and or pressure are, then you need to learn what affects it has when running high temp or low pressure.  As well as the things that factor into those readings and their effect on the motor performance.  Then the subject of how to lower temps and raise pressure need to be learned.

I like electrical gauges, they tend to be more reliable when you buy good quality devices.

You can have both. Here is an oil temp gauge for the oil tank:

I like that but I don't have the factory oil tank.  Might be if I add a oil cooler I could add a temp sensor there with s gauge up by the cluster

You probably don't want to know your oil temps, I did a side by side test on two CB750's a while back, one with an oil cooler and one without, and both ran way hotter than I expected after a short mix of suburban/highway riding. I don't like to rely on 45 year old light globes so I install mechanical oil pressure gauges, and I figure that while I've got oil pressure, all's well with the world.... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

It definitely will make you appreciate modern oil performance and understand why we change the oil so frequently in our motorcycles.

Put a temp gauge on it its more crap to worry about or smack a rear end staring at it  :D

Well you shouldn't be staring at people's rear ends Eric, and you definitely shouldn't be smacking them! My "Bitsa build" K2 has a redneck oil temp gauge, looks like the PO of my K0 oil tank drilled a hole in the oil cap and shoved an oven thermometer in there, actually works and looks kinda cool....... ;D

Mantree, probably need to install blocking diodes on the wiring for your turns to get them working right...

My bike got a full rewire.  In Stock form you will have to use diodes to prevent back feed and then ground the blub to frame

Oil is not 'at temp' in the 750 until 180 degrees, and can run past 240 degrees on a hot day. My ex has a brown smile of a scar burned into her right inside thigh from the oil cap, when I painted my K2 top end black in 1973 (for 2 months) and we rode off on a tour. Temps as measured by an oven thermometer in the oil tank that June reached over 260 degrees before I removed the paint!
