rattle can
« on: August 15, 2017, 03:34:06 PM »
i'm thinking of doing a rattle can job on my 750k6 tank and side covers for now so i can see if i like the direction i'm going with the color.  the side covers are from the guy in massachusetts that molds them.  no primer on them yet.  other than cleaning up the current state of the tank which is rough to say the least and fogging the tank to avoid rust can anyone share some tips?  not looking for perfection just better than the rat rod look i've got going on at the moment.

Avoid trying to put heavy coats on.  You want to apply many light coats with very light sanding to smooth and level the paint. Practice on a sheet of metal and if you paint a section with the tank shooting it first you can know what too much paint will look like and understand when it runs.  Start at top and work your way down, overlapping your coats. Consistent distance, speed and spraying past both ends of the tank are needed to get best results.
Your last one or two coats should be heavier wet coats.  Once the paint has hardened in a week I would color sand with 2000 wet dry.  Once you have a nice level very clean looking paint I would top coat with SprayMax 2K Urethane clear and polish it after cured for a few days.  4 coats recommended, 3 minimum...not counting a dusting first coat to begin the application.

Definitely spray max clear.  Use a respirator though.  If you want a nice urethane basecoat for under the clear. Automotivetouchup.com has every oe auto paint color to choose from for 19.99 a can. Their primer is good stuff too. If your taking it back to metal, I would use spraymax 2k epoxy primer direct to metal, then your sandable automotive touch up primer. Sand 600 grit, then base clear.  Be sure to use their prep solvent as a wipe down then tack everything good.

thanks.  i think i'll spend most of my focus on putting a good primer coat on it then go for a topcoat of choice. a couple quick coats just to see color.  any additional advice for fogging the tank?  it's 99.9% rust free.   :D

Definitely use the 2k clear coat on your fuel tank paint because this clear is more resistant to fuel.  The 2k rattle can has an "ampule" (probably the wrong word) of hardener / activator inside the can that is broken immediately before use - apply pressure to the bottom of the can.   Vigorously shake the can at this point and you had better be ready and all done with your color coat because your working time in the can after the clear has been activated is maybe 36 hours. Much longer than this and the paint will be too thick in the can to spray.

You will likely need to buy this 2k rattle can clear at an automotive paint specialty store and don't expect to find it at an auto parts store or Walmart.  I think I paid about 22 bucks USD for my last can although the Ebay link below is slightly more expensive.

+1 on the advice above about using a respirator mask.  This stuff has some form of cyanide in it - isocyanate - nasty stuff.
