Topic: cb650 bolt kits

hey guys I'm working on a 79 cb650 and I'm just having a bear of a time trying to find any engine bolt kits or small parts here or there. so the question to you guys out there is there anyone who makes a engine bolt kit? Would it be better to spend a day and my local bolt supply picking and choosing my hardware to make my own kit? for example the head bolts have a shoulder on them is that relevant or does it not matter? i mean I've checked partzilla and to be honest 5$ a bolt is pretty crazy. Can I just go with an allen bolt?

It may be cheaper to assemble your own kit but it's a hell of a lot easier to just buy a kit.

I would think a 550 kit would mostly work as well.

For carb screws I usually make a list and visit the local bolt store.
Usually the factory parts list indicates size and number of screws required.

Also, use a bit of anti-seize with stainless-into-aluminum.

Wheat about the internal bolts for mounting the head to the cylinders? Could I use bolt from a supplier or are they a special bolt?

Well besides being rusty I'm missing a bunch. Pretty much all the valve to head bolts and missing 2 head to cylinder bolts, the rest are rusty

Ah, ok. Well I'd probably get new new internal engine bolts from Honda if they are still available just to be sure.

I can get them from partzilla but all the bolts end up 150$ so that's why I was wondering if I could go to a standard bolt of the same dimension.

Yikes! you do need a few bolts!

You might make a post in the "Wanted" forum listing the specific bolts you need and see if another forum member can help you out.

Ya we have a store like that here called bolt supply but my question is can I use any grade 5 or grade 8 bolt of internal use

I don't see why not. The torque spec isn't beyond the grade strength.

Metric fasteners use a different grade number than SAE bolts.  An SAE bolt will have a grade 2,  5 and grade 8, whereas, a Metric has a 8.8 and 10.8 equivalent marking.

A bolt with no hash marks that is SAE would be a Grade 2 bolt.  Three hash marks on the head indicate Grade 5 and 6 hash marks represent a Grade 8 bolt.  Metric fasteners generally have the grade cast on the bolt head .
