Valve adjustment messed up!!!???
« on: August 26, 2017, 07:03:14 AM »
According to the manual, rotate the crank clockwise and watch the inlet valve go down then rise up. At that point align cyl 1/4 T mark  with index mark. The #1 should be at TDC and the inlet and exhaust valves should be closed.

In my case, when I rotate the crank using the points nut clockwise, and watch the #1 inlet goes down then rises up it's always on the Cyl 2/3 and never on Cyl 1/4.

Did I mess something up?
Could it be that I put the points shift wrong when I installed the Dyna Ignition?

Thanks

This is the way i do it..starting with #1 cyl..turn engine over watching exhaust open turning kick start by hand, then intake opens using thin long screwdriver feel the piston come to top TDC on compression, then adjust valves...same with 2 3 4

The rocker arms will be loose and wiggle when the valve to be adjusted is set at the T mark on the timing plate.

Hey fellow Nutmegger think about the 4 stokes suck, squeeze, bang, blow.  Each stroke is happening every 180° on the cb. The 1/4 mark position at the highest center happens on squeeze and blow. The intake moves on the suck which would mean as your turning towards the 2/3 mark on one of the passes. You can get this straight by checking the tappets on no.  1  when both intake and exhaust are loose valves are closed and your at the top of the squeeze stroke ready to make fire!  And the mark should be on 1/4. Watch the movement of that as you roll through clockwise of course and I think you'll find your in good shape.

Unless you install the cam backwards not speaking form experience of course lol.

Maybe I was paranoid, or maybe the cam chain tensioner took all my common sense. Anyway, I went ahead and checked/adjusted one piston at a time TDC. And they were all right. .002 intake .003 exhaust. 1975 CB750F

I go with for now

Thanks guys

Google "Rule of Nine valve adjustment". It works for in-line 4 cylinder engines.

eg If No 1 valve is down, adjust No 8, If No 3 is down adjust No 6 and so on.
