75 CB400F exhaust sound question
« on: August 20, 2017, 09:15:46 PM »
My 400F runs great. I've learned to stretch my rides out because I hate for them to be over. One thing I've noticed is that coming down under compression, I get a mild popping, crackling or barking sound from my exhaust. Kind of like a car with open collectors. My exhaust is stock. My 71 SL350 doesn't do this (I realize it's a totally different engine). This is not a complaint. Just curious if other 400F's do this too. I don't know of any other SOHC4's in my area to compare to.

Mine doesn't at all. Neither does my 750. But it did take some very finicky carb tuning to eliminate it. Usually a tiny idle mixture screw adjustment can tune that out. That's assuming the air filter is stock.

Thanks guys. Yes my intake is original. I'll play with the idle mixture.

could also be caused by an air leak on the induction side. check all your clamps between the airbox/carbs/engine
