Interchangeability of parts database?
« on: August 16, 2017, 07:11:00 PM »
Sbj says it all.  Does this exist somewhere?

Searching through the forums, I see lots of examples of does part x from this model work with that model.

What I'm wondering is if there's an easy place to find this out?

For example, I have a 1978 CB550k.  How do I know what electric parts (reg/rec, stators, etc) I can use from other models?  What about carb parts, filters, I don't even know what else?  What year ranges, what models? Is a 550 nighthawk compatible with a 550k's parts?  I feel pretty lost.

Is there some kind of online place for this?  Or do I just have to become a guru in 30 years?

cheers!

The night hawk is not even the same machine as the 78K.

70's Cb550 engines are each and all the same.  With the exception of a highly coveted valve cover and an odd clutch basket.
The pipes and carbs were mostly interchangable.  But that came with different carb jet tuning for each year.  Many had PD series carbs, a few deviants ( ;D ) had A series.

Wiring harnesses were different between the F and K 550's.

Hope that helps!

Delta's post is great source for exact replacement part information...however Honda's have many tricky swap options, and yes it takes years to learn what can work where
If it works good, it looks good...

Get the parts list:
http://honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb550

Always a good to have. This will give you the original part number.
Then, as was mentioned above, you can go online and search.
Honda has been "consolidating" the part numbers for older bikes and many older part numbers are superseded by new numbers.
Pretty much any interchangeability of any parts for your bike beyond screws and bolts is going to occur with the bikes made in the 70's.

Learning the product codes is helpful too.
Each bike had a code number like 300 for the early 750's or 404 for the 78 550K for example.
This page explains Honda's part numbering system.

(The 650/550 engine thing is a whole 'nuther discussion.)

+1. This is my go to savior.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

This is great, thank you.  I'm realizing that going for a 550k vs a 750k has really put me in a more rare market for parts :s

I've found that if I look up parts on partzilla it lists all models that use that part as well. I usually use the site then take the part number to my local dealer to order it. I'm in Canada and usually the price listed on partzilla is close to what I pay here without paying USD to CAD exchange.
