Stripped Cylinder Head thread.(from exhaust)
« on: June 04, 2005, 03:50:21 AM »
When re-attaching the an exhaust retaining rings on my 76 cb400 4, I managed to stip the threads in the cylinder head. Would anyone know what the best course of action would be? I've only had the bike a week and I would like to try keep the repairs on the budget end of things. I've seen helicoils are excellent repair tools but I never used them myself and would hate to cause even more damage. Any advice would be much appreciated.
cheers

Heli coils are as easy to instal as a light bulb.  Ok a little more involved than that.

If your exhaust bolts are M8X1.25 get the kit # 770-3093 from NAPA and a nice 21/64 drill bit as well.

As long as you get the hole straight you are in buisiness.  I saved my sandcast head with one.  I ran one helicoil in, snapped the tab and ran another one in behind it.  Cut off the excess and it made for an invisible repair.

providing you can get at it it will be quite safe to do it with the head still in place.

put grease or vaseline in there so any pieces, nits, or doo-doo don't get inside.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!
